The concealed state of people with powers
The Night CleanerThe concealed state of people with powers is the secrecy Dorian overturns when he tells the world that gifted people are already among them and will no longer stay hidden. His announcement recasts concealment as life in the shadows and promises release from it, but pairs that promise with a threat: the coming solar eclipse will mark the beginning of the age of the gifted, and heroes who resist will lose everything.
The Public Announcement
The concealed state is first made explicit in Dorian’s televised address from the capitol. He tells the world that people with powers are among ordinary people and are not going anywhere. The broadcast makes a previously hidden population a public fact, changing secrecy from an assumed condition into the subject of an open declaration.
Dorian presents that disclosure as a turning point rather than a simple revelation. He says there is no longer any need for gifted people to remain in the shadows and frames their emergence as being set free. His invitation is deliberately stark: people may fear the gifted or join them, but they cannot pretend they are absent.
Concealment and Political Conflict
Dorian’s later appeal to the people defending Hero Society gives his argument a sharper grievance. He claims that humans had been willing to hurt the gifted only days earlier, had abandoned them, and did not deserve the defenders’ continued loyalty. In his telling, secrecy and exclusion are not neutral arrangements: they leave people with powers vulnerable to human hostility, while asking them to remain hidden and accept the existing order.
That accusation is part of a recruitment appeal, not a detached account of how concealment operated. Dorian urges his audience to join him and live without fear or persecution, condemns the gods as fools, and invokes their deaths as a warning against repeating their fate. The speech therefore makes the end of hiding inseparable from his attempt to undermine Hero Society and gather support for his cause.
From Disclosure to War
The announcement joins the end of concealment to an immediate timetable. Dorian points to the solar eclipse of the century, due the following day, and predicts that darkness will cover the earth as the age of the gifted begins. He then addresses the heroes directly, challenging them to stop his faction and warning that resistance will cost them everything. Public visibility is thus framed not as a gradual social change but as the opening of a decisive conflict.
The broadcast’s effect is visible in the narrator’s response: the declaration is understood as the arrival of darkness, and the peaceful moment shared with Rose gives way to the need to prepare for war. Later, Dorian describes the nearly empty city as inhabited only by a few who have chosen to stand against him. The concealed state has been broken, but the newly visible gifted are not shown entering a settled or accepted public life; the evidence instead follows disclosure into confrontation, with Dorian insisting that the old order is over and his opponents refusing to yield.
