A chained killer
After killing Brownlee, Henry Drax is held in chains. Cavendish tells the crew that he will not see daylight until they return to Hull.
Authority changes hands
Brownlee’s death leaves Cavendish in command. Drax’s confinement appears to remove a threat, but the survivors still depend on the man they have imprisoned for labor and knowledge.
The Ship Must Sink

A Compromised Bargain
Drax knows the truth
Drax tells Cavendish the ship has not been fatally damaged by the ice. He offers to make the breach himself, preserving the intended wreck.
A secret exchange
Cavendish gives Drax an axe and damages the hull. In return, Drax asks that Cavendish not obstruct him if a future chance to escape appears.
The Camp Loses Control

Command by Force
Mutiny and bloodshed
The men quarrel after the Hastings vanishes. Cavendish is attacked, then shoots Bannon when the Shetlander charges him with a stave.
A brittle order
Cavendish claims continued command through armed threat. Drax watches from his chains, understanding that the group’s authority is already breaking apart.
The Escape Agreement

A Way Out Appears
Drax bargains again
Drax asks Cavendish for a file and an opportunity to escape with the Yaks. He presents his departure as one fewer mouth to feed.
A second man joins
Cavendish initially considers staying, then insists he will come too. Drax frees himself during the night while Cavendish watches and prepares to leave.
The Last Betrayal

Drax Chooses His Own Future
The Yaks are killed
Drax enters the snow house and kills both sleeping hunters. He takes their clothes, weapons, and sledge equipment.
Cavendish is silenced
