1K PostApoc
The Old Axolotl1K PostApoc is the novel’s first-millennium-after-the-apocalypse time marker, framing a Tokyo where human society has disappeared from the streets but machines and remnants of the old world remain. Its clearest date is day 847 PostApoc, when Bartek’s struggle to repair his damaged body opens onto an uncertain future; the later 10K PostApoc heading makes this period the earlier horizon of a much longer history of Transformer civilization.
Dating and narrative position
The label appears as a major chronological marker after a scene in which Bartek puts on a skullcap and Rytka presses ENTER. The chapter heading identifies the ensuing period as 1K POSTAPOC, while the narrative supplies a more precise date within it: day 847 PostApoc. The novel thus gives this era both a broad historical scale and an intimate point of reference, locating its future not only in millennia but in the days endured by an individual.
Tokyo on day 847
The period is rendered through the deserted commercial district of Tokyo, where a poster for Transformers 9 hangs above two manga sexbots fighting. Bartek, already missing his left leg, lies on a kiosk roof and uses his Wire to bring them down with a Faraday. His delighted leap ends in a fall through the cardboard roof: inhabiting a half-ton Miharayasuhiro Star Trooper, he has again forgotten where and who he is. The episode sets the era’s bodily vulnerability against its oversized mechanical forms, and the persistence of commercial images against a city emptied of ordinary human life.
On day 847, Bartek cannot run away because he has lost a leg. The irigotchi do not know Polish or English; only the fading lights of night-time Tokyo answer him in a blinking Morse code. The date lands at a threshold: the next eternity is opening before him, but communication and companionship remain radically limited.
Repair, resources, and the later horizon
Bartek works in an underground garage beneath the forty-storey Aiko Tower, making himself a replacement limb. The parts for a boutique Miharayasuhiro are rare, and the skills needed to use them rarer still. Tokyo Transformers of the Royal Alliance seek him out when they need help, and surplus hardware serves as payment. His workshop fills with hundreds of robot parts, stacked along its walls and piled on racks above him. In this first-millennium setting, survival depends not on a single miraculous repair but on technical knowledge, accumulated materials, and an emerging network of exchange.
The later 10K PostApoc heading sharply extends the scale. The First Transformer War breaks out over resources, as SoulEater had predicted, and leaves ownership of working servers and power plants clear. By 4529 PostApoc, the last white dot disappears from the world map: no unaffiliated Transformer can independently secure constant hardware maintenance and regular power. Set against that later consolidation, the day-847 workshop and its surplus parts belong to an earlier, less settled phase of machine life, before independent provision has become impossible.
