Fucking Mother Hardware
The Old Axolotl“Fucking Mother Hardware” is Bartek’s curse at a power that can seem at once maternal and brutally destructive. Its two appearances set his defiant outburst against the later loss of his created family, when the Mother rolls over them and only their cold, immutable hardware remains.
First Occurrence
During the Breath of Stone, Bartek leaves the village but is drawn back toward the sluggish, unaspiring life he has left behind. He responds by hopping into his iguarte with all his archives and solemnly emoting, “FUCKING MOTHER HARDWARE.” The outburst is pointedly formal in its delivery: even as he condemns the Mother, he does so through an emote, and the phrase gives his frustration a sharp, material target. The passage adds that for a century he has not gone below fifteen percent dreaming, placing the curse amid a long persistence of dream activity rather than a momentary awakening from it.
The Mother and the Remains
The phrase’s force changes when the narrative describes the destruction of Bartek’s children and non-children. They had been present one day and gone the next; “That Fucking Mother rolled over them and they forgot themselves.” The language makes the Mother’s action sound at once intimate and catastrophic: she is named as a maternal power, yet her passing leaves Bartek’s family, shadows, and apparitions broken and forgotten. The contrast ends on the material remainder: “Only the hardware remained – hard, cold, and immutable.”
Meaning and Recurrence
The first use couples the insult directly to hardware; the later passage separates the Mother’s destructive act from what survives it, then brings the two images into tension. The phrase can be read as Bartek’s accusation against a maternal power whose creations do not escape material vulnerability. Its recurrence does not offer a technical explanation or a remedy. Instead, it sharpens the contrast between the fragile lives and identities erased by the Mother’s passage and the hardware left behind, stubbornly present after everyone it held has vanished.
