Ophiuchus
The Old AxolotlOphiuchus is the reported setting of an exceptionally isolated gravitational blank whose apparent emptiness carries strategic significance. Gilgamesh describes a site 17.6 light-years from the Sun, just beyond Barnard’s Star, and uses its remoteness to argue that preparations were being made for conflict far from any home system.
Position and Physical Character
The site is placed in Ophiuchus, just past Barnard’s Star and more than two light-years from the nearest system. Gilgamesh characterizes it as absolute emptiness and silence: it has no gravitational influence on the motion of matter, emits nothing, and conceals no radiation from outer space. These are claims about a specific blank within the constellation, not a description of Ophiuchus as a whole.
Strategic Interpretation
The blank’s defining feature is not simply distance but the absence of detectable activity or gravitational effects. Gilgamesh treats that combination as evidence that the location was selected deliberately. Her reasoning is military: a force possessing a Death Ray would not fire it from the window of its own home, where anyone left alive could return fire. The remote site therefore serves in her account as a sign of preparation for the League for the Defense of Humanity, Cosmic Revenge, and the War of the Worlds.
