Free Ruby!
The One and Only Ivan“Free Ruby!” is the protest slogan calling for Ruby’s release from the mall. Repeated by people carrying signs and shouted as the demonstrations grow, it turns her name into a public demand for freedom—and prompts Ruby to wonder whether the crowds are angry with her.
The Slogan in the Protests
The call for Ruby’s freedom first appears amid a growing presence of people with signs. They want her released, and some also want Mack to shut down the mall. In the evening, Mack discusses the protesters with George: he says they are protesting the wrong person, fears they will ruin everything, and blames George before stomping away. Left holding his mop, George watches him go and rubs his eyes, looking worried. The slogan therefore enters a conflict that reaches beyond Ruby’s immediate treatment to the future of the mall.
A Growing Public Chorus
The protests continue and expand. Every day brings more demonstrators and cameras with bright lights; sometimes the sign-carrying crowds shout, “Free Ruby! Free Ruby!” The repeated chant makes the demand audible as well as visible. Ruby’s name is not merely displayed on signs: it is called out in a crowd whose size and media attention keep increasing.
What Ruby Hears
Ruby asks Ivan why the people are yelling her name and whether they are mad at her. Ivan tells her that they are angry, but not with her. His reassurance clarifies the slogan’s target: the protest is directed against the circumstances keeping Ruby captive, not against Ruby herself. The phrase thus carries two meanings in the scene—an appeal for her freedom to the public, and a source of uncertainty for Ruby until Ivan explains the crowd’s anger.
