Interstate 95
The One and Only IvanInterstate 95 is the highway beside the Exit 8 Big Top Mall and Video Arcade, linking the mall’s roadside identity to the relentless movement beyond its parking lot. Seen from Ivan’s enclosure, it represents an outside world that is near enough to watch but not to enter.
Setting and Visibility
The mall is conveniently located off Interstate 95. From his domain, Ivan can see through the mall’s windowed walls across the vast, treeless parking lot to the freeway beyond. Cars pass in an unending stream, described through the novel’s animal perspective as a stampede. The road is part of Ivan’s view of the world, but the glass and enclosure keep that movement at a distance.
The Mall’s Roadside Identity
A giant sign at the edge of the freeway beckons passing drivers to stop, comparing the invitation to gazelles pausing at a watering hole. Its colors have faded and run, yet it announces the Exit 8 Big Top Mall and Video Arcade as the home of Ivan, the “Mighty Silverback.” The sign turns the highway’s traffic into potential customers and presents Ivan as one of the mall’s attractions.
Promotional Use and Significance
When Mack speaks by telephone with a prospective visitor, he emphasizes that the mall is open 365 days a year and right off Interstate 95, inviting the caller to come see Ivan in action. The highway thus serves as practical access and advertising shorthand: its proximity is treated as a reason to visit. For Ivan, however, the same road is chiefly something glimpsed beyond the enclosure. The contrast between passing cars and his fixed, glass-bounded habitat makes the highway a recurring measure of movement and confinement.
