Paris

The Other Black Girl

Paris enters the narrative not as a visited setting but as a possibility in the paper trail surrounding Kendra Rae Phillips’s disappearance. A handwritten note Richard Wagner kept on her whereabouts asks whether she moved there in 1992; its question marks make the location a lead, not an established fact.

Paris in Richard’s Notes

Nella Rogers encounters the reference while scrolling to the last photograph in her camera roll, a wallet-sized image of Kendra Rae Phillips’s page that she guesses dates from around the publication of Burning Heart. Beside the image are notes in Richard’s handwriting, with dates extending from the 1980s to the present. Among the entries Nella reads aloud is “1992—moved to Paris???” The uncertain punctuation matters: the notes record Richard’s speculation, not confirmation that Kendra went to Paris.

Narrative Significance

The Paris entry belongs to a chronology of attempted sightings and unexplained disappearances. It sits between a possible upstate sighting dated January 5, 1986, and a later note confirming that Kendra was seen near 100th Street and Broadway on October 20, 2018. That final entry says Kendra took Shani Edmonds’s phone before going underground, allowing Nella to realize that Shani was the person put into the black sedan. Paris therefore marks one unverified possibility in Richard’s long-running search, while the later, confirmed sighting changes Nella’s understanding of Shani’s fate.
