Rise & Grind Café
The Other Black GirlRise & Grind Café is a Midtown Manhattan café that becomes a crucial site of recognition in Shani Edmonds’s story: while working there, Shani identifies Eva, whom she had previously encountered at Cooper’s Magazine, and covertly photographs her for Lynn to verify. Its ordinary routines and public openness give the scene its tension: a place where Shani is expected to blend into the background becomes the setting where she sees through Eva’s disguise.
Setting and Daily Work
The café is introduced through the repetitive rhythm of Shani’s shift. The front door scrapes open and closed; customers ask about Wi-Fi, the bathroom password, and whether cards are accepted. Shani, once employed at Cooper’s Magazine, now sweeps straw papers from the floor in Midtown, a change in circumstance that shapes how she experiences each new arrival. When Eva enters, Shani initially takes her for another New York millennial who seems to be doing better in life, then looks back down at her work.
Specific details make the café a working environment rather than a neutral meeting place. Shani grips the broom so tightly that its handle grows almost as hot as her palms, and later her scattered strokes across the red-tiled floor do little to calm her anxiety. The dirty front windows also matter: late-afternoon light coming through them eventually gives Shani a clearer view of Eva’s face.
Eva’s Arrival and Recognition
Eva’s appearance at Rise & Grind first disguises her familiarity. Shani notices striking hair, a high-collared tunic, and flashy gold hoops, but not the person she remembers. What breaks through the disguise is Eva’s manner: she flips her hair in a distinctive way and flirts with the café’s young boss while pretending not to know the difference between a latte and a cold brew. At Cooper’s, Shani had heard her speak spiritedly about coffee with senior staff; the contrast makes the performance recognizable.
The café also recalls an earlier encounter in Boston, where Shani had seen Eva in a J. Jill style. Now Eva looks more like a woman of the world, in clothes Shani associates with Zara. The change in presentation initially obscures her identity, but her gestures and studied ignorance expose the continuity beneath it. Shani’s recognition is therefore not based on appearance alone: it comes from remembering how Eva moves and behaves across different settings.
The Photograph and Confirmation
Shani recalls Lynn’s instruction to blend in when encountering an OBG, so that the other person will not know where Shani is. Unsure whether Eva has noticed her or knows she works at the café, Shani returns to sweeping a far corner and listens to Eva argue that Maroon 5 has improved with time. The remark recalls Eva’s earlier willingness in Boston to defend John Mayer, further reinforcing Shani’s identification.
Shani then takes out her phone and discreetly photographs Eva. The first image is blurry, so she takes two more. In the third, Eva’s flirtatious head tilt and the late-afternoon light through the dirty windows make her deep-brown skin and high cheekbones clear enough for Lynn to compare with the image in her files. Shani puts the phone away and resumes sweeping, but remains anxious while waiting for a reply. It arrives minutes later, after she has moved to the bathroom to check the soap levels: Lynn confirms that the woman is Eva.
Narrative Significance
Rise & Grind’s everyday public setting contrasts with the concealed recognition taking place inside it. Shani is performing routine, low-status work while quietly watching someone whose changed style allows her to blend into the café’s ordinary flow. The scene makes that apparent anonymity unstable: Eva can pass as an unfamiliar customer until Shani recognizes the voice, gestures, and behavior she remembers.
The café also becomes a practical link in Shani’s communication with Lynn. Its commonplace details—the broom, the customer questions, the bathroom supplies—frame the brief, consequential exchange of a photograph and confirmation. In the chapter dated August 30, 2018, the recognition at Rise & Grind turns suspicion into a verified identification, while leaving Shani exposed to the uncertainty of whether Eva has noticed her.
