Shani Joins the Resistance

The Other Black Girl

Shani Joins the Resistance marks the moment Shani moves from searching for the Resistance at a distance to being admitted into its clandestine meeting place. Her entrance is not a simple welcome: at Joe’s Barbershop, a lapse in security prompts an argument over whether she can be trusted, and a code question makes her demonstrate her judgment before she is allowed inside.

Arrival and Uncertainty

After a forty-five-minute cab ride, Shani reaches Joe’s Barbershop in Harlem, New York, in the middle of the night. She has searched online for information about Lynn Johnson and the Resistance throughout the ride but found nothing. The shop is supposed to be closed, and the sputtering engine of a car at the corner of 127th Street and Frederick Douglass Avenue is the only persistent sound nearby. The lack of information has brought her to the meeting, but it has not made her feel safe there.

A man at the entrance, Will, puts away his phone and looks her over. He reassures her that those inside are family and offers a fist bump, but Shani hesitates at the idea of a family gathering at three in the morning. The scene holds welcome and suspicion together: Will treats her arrival casually, while the closed shop, the late hour, and her unanswered search make the invitation feel precarious.

The Security Test

Before Shani can enter, a woman inside calls out to Will for letting her approach without asking the code question. The reprimand exposes a breach in the group’s precautions: Shani has already seen Will’s face and learned his name. The woman warns that, if Shani were an OBG, the operation would be compromised and the Resistance exposed. Her concern is not abstract; it arises from Will having identified himself to an unknown visitor before verifying who she is.

Will resists the procedure, but the woman insists that protecting the group is her responsibility and orders him to ask the question. He then presents a deliberately absurd emergency: an asteroid is on course to destroy all Black people except one, who must be either Stacey Dash or Ben Carson, and Shani must choose whom to save. The question turns entry into a test of allegiance and judgment, while the argument around it shows that the Resistance’s security rules are enforced even when a member finds them irritating.

Admission and Descent into the Shop

Shani takes time to answer. She chooses Ben, explaining that although both choices are awful and he has said idiotic things, at least he could save somebody’s life. Will accepts her reasoning and checks with the woman, who gives permission for Shani to proceed. Her answer does not reveal a detailed doctrine of the Resistance; it is the immediate response that satisfies the gatekeepers and changes her status from outsider at the door to permitted entrant.

The woman says there will be no lights until they are upstairs, then a flashlight flickers on ahead of Shani. Shani calls out to Lynn and is told that they will talk upstairs and that she should follow. She enters in near-total darkness, with someone—probably Will—placing hands on her shoulders to guide her. The passage from the doorway into the building is therefore also a passage into the group’s hidden world: admission brings access, but not clarity or comfort.

Significance of the Entrance

The scene makes secrecy tangible through small procedures and objects: a supposedly closed barbershop, a phone slipped into a pocket, a code question, and a flashlight that appears only after the decision to admit Shani. The Resistance’s precautions are shown as necessary to its survival, but Will’s careless welcome demonstrates how easily they can fail. Shani’s acceptance comes only after that conflict is confronted and the woman in charge approves her entry.

Even after she is allowed inside, Shani remains wary. In the pitch-black shop she strains to see what surrounds her and recognizes that coming there was more than foolish; it was crazy. The event ends not with a full introduction to the Resistance or an account of its plans, but with Shani following her guide upstairs to speak with Lynn. Its decisive change is narrower and more immediate: a search that had yielded no information has brought Shani to the group’s threshold, and she has crossed it under its rules.
