Adam Jessup

The Outlaws

Adam Jessup is an elderly banker whose guarded first response to Del Delaney gives way to active support for Kate Muldoon. His role is modest but consequential: when the conflict over Kate’s inheritance approaches a showdown, he is prepared to help defend her, despite her concern for his safety.

Identity and First Impression

Jessup is described as an old, large man with a white beard. Del’s assumptions about bankers are that they are miserly and unkind, but Jessup does not fit that picture; Del instead thinks of him as resembling Santa Claus. That impression is Del’s, not a judgment Jessup makes about himself, and it establishes a contrast between the banker’s appearance and Del’s expectations of his profession.

Meeting with Del Delaney

When Del introduces himself as Kate’s representative, Jessup’s manner changes at once. He draws back, becomes visibly tense and suspicious, and studies Del as a possible threat. After a pause, however, he agrees to speak with him, opens the gate at the counter, and invites him to sit. His first question is whether Kate is alive and well, suggesting that his caution does not amount to indifference toward her.

Kate’s Ally in the Dispute

As the dispute over Kate’s inheritance reaches its decisive stage, Jessup recognizes that the outcome will affect more than Kate and Del. He says that the county as a whole will be affected, with Windy Holt as the exception. His concern therefore extends beyond the immediate personal conflict: he understands the approaching confrontation as a matter with wider consequences for the community.

Readiness to Help

Jessup leans his Greener shotgun against the wall by the door. He acknowledges that he is old and cannot see well at a distance, but says he will do what he can if needed and warns Del not to assume that help will be scarce. Kate tells him to stay out of the danger because she does not want him hurt. Jessup resists her instruction, making clear that his decision to support her is his own. The scene shifts him from the wary banker Del first encountered into a willing participant in Kate’s defense, while retaining the practical limits he openly recognizes.
