Iron Bridge

The Outsider (Stephen King Edition)

Iron Bridge marks a specific turn in the police reconstruction of the suspect’s movements after Frank Peterson’s murder. The account places it between the abandonment of a stolen Subaru and the suspect’s change into clean clothes, making the bridge a waypoint in a route assembled from vehicles, clothing, and a later attempt to travel by train.

Role in the Reconstructed Route

Ralph Anderson lays out the sequence while reviewing the evidence with Yune Sablo. The suspect first leaves the van behind Shorty’s Pub, takes a Subaru, and then abandons the Subaru near Iron Bridge. From there, he changes into fresh clothes. The bridge is thus not merely a place on the map: it helps connect the switch between vehicles to the change of appearance that follows.

Clothing and the Unfinished Escape

The clothing list makes the reconstruction concrete. The discarded outfit includes 501 jeans, Jockey underpants, white athletic socks, expensive sneakers, and a belt with a distinctive horse’s-head buckle. Ralph identifies the buckle as the same one seen in security-camera footage of Terry Maitland at the Vogel Transportation Center in Dubrow. The identification gives the discarded clothing particular evidentiary weight, while the clean outfit suggests an effort to separate the suspect’s later movements from clothes that might bear blood.

After changing, the suspect takes a cab from Gentlemen, Please to Dubrow. Yet he does not board a train at the station. Ralph’s account ends on that unresolved choice: the route can be traced through the van, the Subaru, Iron Bridge, the clothes, and the cab, but the failure to take the train leaves the purpose or next step of the journey unsettled. Iron Bridge therefore belongs to a chain of evidence that narrows the movements without making the escape fully intelligible.
