Ponyboy and Cherry's cross-class friendship

Ponyboy Curtis, a fourteen-year-old greaser, and Cherry Valance, a Soc cheerleader, meet at the Nightly Double drive-in when Dallas Winston harasses Cherry and her friend Marcia. Johnny Cade intervenes, and Cherry invites Ponyboy and Johnny to sit with them. Despite their different worlds, they discover a mutual appreciation for sunsets and a capacity for honest conversation. Cherry tells Ponyboy, "Things are rough all over," challenging his assumption that Socs have no troubles. Ponyboy shares personal stories, including about Sodapop's horse Mickey Mouse, and Cherry admits she could "fall in love with Dallas Winston." Their connection is tested when Cherry's boyfriend Bob Sheldon is killed by Johnny. Cherry agrees to spy on the Socs for the greasers and testifies at the hearing, but she refuses to visit Johnny in the hospital. Ponyboy angrily accuses her of disloyalty, but later apologizes, acknowledging her pain. Their friendship ultimately symbolizes the possibility of understanding across class lines, though it remains constrained by the social structures that separate them.
