“Handsome as Laba”

The Painted Bird

“Handsome as Laba” is a village expression built around the memory of Handsome Laba. It survives his unexplained disappearance and is given a vivid counterpart when he reappears in an elaborate suit, turning a remembered reputation into a public image once more.

The Saying and Its Survival

One day Handsome Laba fails to return from the field. He is absent the following day and the day after that, then vanishes from the villagers’ lives without an explanation in the account. The narrative compares his disappearance to a stone falling to the bottom of a lake, emphasizing its suddenness and depth rather than supplying a cause.

Life continues without him, but the saying “handsome as Laba” remains. The phrase becomes the clearest trace of his place in village memory: a person’s name persists not through any account of what happened to him, but through a compact measure of appearance and distinction.

The Return and Its Appearance

Later, the doors of a hut open and the crowd reacts with astonishment. Handsome Laba stands on the threshold in a finely dressed outfit: a striped silk shirt with a white collar, a patterned tie, a flannel suit, a satin handkerchief in his breast pocket, black boots, and a gold watch. His reappearance provides the narrative’s concrete image of the elegance associated with his name.

The contrast is sharp: the man who had seemed entirely lost returns before a crowd, and the surviving saying now has a visible referent again. The account gives no explanation for where he has been or what brought him back. Instead, it focuses on the public recognition prompted by his appearance.

Meaning and Narrative Function

The expression links absence, communal memory, and spectacle. During Handsome Laba’s disappearance, the saying outlasts the person; at his return, his clothing makes the remembered association newly present. The episode does not resolve the mystery of his absence, but shows how a village can preserve someone in a phrase and then encounter that phrase embodied in an unexpected return.
