Easter

The Painted Bird

Easter appears as one of two exceptional days in the old woman’s rules for washing: she says a person should bathe at Christmas and Easter, and even then only lightly and without undressing. The date marks a narrow exception to her usual avoidance of washing, governed by her belief that exposure to fresh air brings disease.

A Rare Day for Washing

For the old woman, Easter is part of a twice-yearly schedule, paired with Christmas rather than treated as an ordinary opportunity for cleanliness. The bathing she allows remains carefully restricted: it must be brief and take place without removing clothes. Her rule turns the holiday into a rare point on a calendar organized around fear of illness.
