Phantoms

The Painted Bird

Phantoms are elusive, shape-shifting beings in Olga the Wise One’s account of the supernatural forces surrounding the unnamed boy narrator. She describes them as drawn to the evil spirit she believes lives within him: rarely seen and difficult to hear, yet capable of intruding persistently into fields, forests, and homes. Their folklore makes the narrator’s supposed possession not merely a private condition but a point of contact with an unseen world.

Place in Olga’s Folklore

During a winter storm, while the village was enclosed by impassable snow, Olga told the narrator stories of God’s children and Satan’s spirits. She called him the Black One and taught him that his unblinking, bewitched eyes marked him as possessed. In her account, this hidden presence attracts other mysterious beings, among them Phantoms. The narrator does not independently establish that these beings exist; their nature and connection to him come through Olga’s explanation of the world.

Habits and Forms

A Phantom is silent and reticent, and is seldom seen. Its elusiveness does not make it harmless: Olga says it persists in tripping people in fields and forests and peering into huts. It can also assume the form of a vicious cat or a rabid dog. When enraged, it moans; at midnight, it turns into hot tar. The account moves from an indistinct presence to recognizable animal shapes and finally to a startling material transformation, giving the Phantom a place between the unseen and the tangible.

Narrative Significance

Phantoms belong to the same explanatory system through which Olga interprets the narrator’s dark eyes and supposed possession. Their defining quality is a contradiction: they are rarely visible, but their alleged actions bring them close to everyday life, crossing the boundaries of fields, forests, and huts. That combination makes them a measure of how far Olga’s account reaches beyond the narrator’s body: his condition is said to draw a persistent, changing presence into the ordinary spaces around him.
