Kemble

Kemble is named among the real-life figures incorporated into the novel’s fictional enterprise, a distinction that separates his presence in the story from the historical record the author addresses in the acknowledgments.

Appearance in the Novel

The author groups Kemble with Sylvanus Thayer, Ethan Allen Hitchcock, and other historical figures who appear in the book, while emphasizing that they are conscripted into a fictional narrative. The acknowledgment separately notes that no cadets were murdered or seriously injured during Thayer’s tenure; it does not attribute any specific action or characterization to Kemble.
