Fantasie

The Pale Horse

Fantasie is the setting for Mark Easterbrook’s dinner with Poppy, a social visit that he turns into a cautious attempt to recover information about Ginger and the Pale Horse. The restaurant brings together two very different kinds of conversation: Poppy’s lively interest in romance and Mark’s effort to learn what she knows about the murder scheme.

The Dinner

Mark takes Poppy to Fantasie when his loneliness has become difficult to bear. Her happy chatter and company soothe him, but he has invited her for more than companionship. After the food and drink have put her at ease, he begins probing carefully, asking whether she remembers Ginger and what she is doing now.

A Misreading of Mark’s Purpose

When Mark says Ginger became involved with Pale Horse business and paid a terrible amount of money, Poppy recognizes him instead as the man whose invalid wife stood in the way of Ginger’s happiness. Her excitement over this presumed love-life revelation overtakes her concern about the Pale Horse connection Mark has raised. The restaurant scene thus turns on a mismatch: Mark is pursuing investigative information, while Poppy is absorbed by the romantic story she thinks she has uncovered.

The Conversation’s Limits

Mark tries to redirect Poppy by claiming an interest in customer research because he is considering buying shares in a company of that kind. She accepts the explanation, but he gets no further useful information from her. They finish the champagne, and he takes her home after thanking her for the evening. Fantasie’s role in the inquiry is therefore brief but consequential as a place where Poppy’s mistaken identification of Mark emerges, even as her enthusiasm prevents the conversation from advancing.
