Lipce village mill

The Peasants

Lipce village mill is a working village landmark beside the pond, woven into the movement of people through Lipce. Its position and recurring sound place it within the landscape of the village, while its appearances coincide with moments when Antek Boryna and Maciej Boryna are unsettled by their conflict over Jagna.

Setting and Sound

The mill stands close enough to the pond that the two sounds merge in the village’s nighttime quiet. On a chilly, bright night, while frost covered the ground and moonlight silvered the pond, the mill’s clatter persisted alongside the monotonous babble of water. The contrast between that steady mechanical noise and the otherwise enveloping silence makes the mill a distinct point in the village soundscape.

Routes Through the Village

After leaving the priest, Antek went down the village toward the mill and continued along the far side of the pond so he would not have to pass Jagna’s house. The detour makes the mill part of a route shaped by avoidance: his destination and the pond’s opposite bank offered a way through the village without confronting the house that drew him and troubled him.

Maciej also moved around the pond on the night of his growing anger, walking first along one side and then the other. He went as far as the inn and drank until nearly midnight, but his agitation did not ease. The mill’s clatter and the water’s babble accompany this restless movement, giving the pond-and-mill setting a recurring place in the passage without making the mill itself the cause of his resolution.

Narrative Significance

The mill is not presented as a site of a major confrontation; its significance lies in its position within Lipce’s everyday geography and in its repeated presence as the characters move through a charged landscape. Antek’s route toward it avoids Jagna’s cottage, while Maciej’s circuit around the pond marks his inability to settle. Against their private turmoil, the mill continues to clatter, a familiar sound that holds the scenes within the ordinary life of the village.
