The Met Enters the Inquiry A strange disappearance Ainsley Lowbeer investigates Aelita West’s disappearance from Edenmere Mansions, where the event was held under a temporary protocol that prevented routine recording. The absence of evidence is not reassuring: it means a witness may be the only way to recover what happened. Flynne’s account matters When Wilf Netherton reports Flynne’s description of the climbing machine, the woman’s death, and the man who seemed to know what was coming, Lowbeer recognizes the possibility of a homicide rather than an abduction. She begins treating Flynne as a witness whose perception can reopen a case designed to leave no trace.

Protection Across Continuums A perilous witness Lowbeer understands that Flynne is threatened in her own world because someone believes she can identify the killer. She arranges for Flynne to enter a peripheral in London, giving the witness a way to see, speak, and participate beyond the reach of the stub’s immediate dangers. Cooperation with conditions Lowbeer offers Flynne protection and a role in the investigation, but does not disclose every part of her plan. She asks Flynne to identify the balcony man at Daedra’s gathering. Their alliance is pragmatic: Flynne wants protection and agency, while Lowbeer needs the direct testimony that surveillance systems cannot supply.

Refusing the Atrocity A proposed weapon As threats against Coldiron intensify, Griff and Lowbeer consider using Party time against the Luke 4:5 protesters. The chemical would provoke extreme violence and lasting psychological harm. Flynne learns what it does and refuses to participate, making her continued cooperation conditional on its removal. A test of character Lowbeer later admits that the proposal was also a test: she wanted to know whether Flynne would accept an atrocity as a convenient tactic. Flynne’s refusal shows that she will not treat people as disposable instruments merely because a larger strategic goal is at stake. Lowbeer keeps Flynne in the plan, now with a clearer sense of her limits.
The Bone SignalThe Bone Signal from "The Peripheral". A Fragile Channel Under tight surveillance At Daedra’s event, personal communication devices are prohibited and Flynne is closely monitored.
A Fragile Channel Under tight surveillance At Daedra’s event, personal communication devices are prohibited and Flynne is closely monitored. Lowbeer equips her peripheral with a hidden channel that Flynne will perceive as “static in your bones,” allowing a warning to reach her without an ordinary visible call. The identification Flynne recognizes Hamed al-Habib at the gathering and uses the covert channel to alert Lowbeer. The method succeeds where public surveillance fails, but it cannot prevent Hamed’s associates from seizing control of the encounter. Lowbeer’s plan depends on Flynne’s judgment and courage, not on an ability to command every event from a distance.

A Political Settlement The killer exposed At Newgate, Lowbeer’s intervention frees Flynne and reveals the alliance between Hamed and Sir Henry Fishbourne. Sir Henry’s backing helps explain the rival operation’s financial and political reach; his presence turns a murder investigation into a question of City power. Force redirected Lowbeer removes Sir Henry and uses the resulting shift in influence to have the Homeland Security orders against Coldiron rescinded. Coldiron also takes a substantial share in Hefty’s parent corporation, securing leverage in the stub. Lowbeer’s methods are coercive and opaque, but the immediate result is that the planned raid no longer threatens Flynne’s family and community.
