tipstaff
The PeripheralLowbeer’s tipstaff is a gilt, fluted-ivory implement concealed inside the left wrist of her peripheral. Revealed during the confrontation with Sir Henry, it becomes part of a sudden display of concealed force: the refined object appears beside a weapon, and Sir Henry is reduced to bone before his clothes and hat fall to the floor.
Appearance and Concealment
The tipstaff is described as gilt and fluted ivory. It is not carried openly: a hatch in the peripheral’s left wrist opens, and the object emerges from the compartment. Its concealment makes the reveal a physical transformation of the body’s appearance, as an apparently ordinary wrist proves to house an instrument of authority and action.
Use in the Confrontation
After Lowbeer sighs and nods to Burton, the peripheral raises both arms. A hatch in its right wrist releases a candy-cane gun, while the slightly larger left-wrist hatch produces the tipstaff. The two objects emerge together, turning the peripheral’s arms into concealed arsenals. Burton has a better idea of how to aim the tipstaff; the tall man then blinks entirely to bone, leaving empty clothes to drop with a rattle and his tall hat to roll across the floor.
Significance
The tipstaff’s polished, formal appearance contrasts with the abrupt violence of the scene. It is both a hidden component of a remote-controlled body and an instrument implicated in the immediate destruction of Sir Henry. After his death, Lowbeer explains that she had acted on the assumption that he would prove guilty, and that his arrival and death had already shifted influence enough for Homeland Security to withdraw and rescind its orders. The object’s unveiling thus belongs to a larger change in power: concealed capability becomes visible at the moment a political threat is removed.
