Walter Reed Army Hospital

The Plot Against America

Walter Reed Army Hospital is the site of Anne Morrow Lindbergh’s confinement during the October 1942 constitutional crisis. Transferred there from the White House and held under the authorities’ claim that she is a mental patient, she escapes with help from Lindbergh loyalists in the Secret Service; the hospital thus marks the transition from her removal from public view to her direct intervention in the crisis.

Setting and Transfer

Just before dawn on October 15, 1942, the First Lady is taken by ambulance from the White House to Walter Reed Army Hospital. The transfer occurs amid an FBI roundup of political figures suspected of conspiring against the president. Authorities describe Anne Morrow Lindbergh as suffering from extreme nervous exhaustion, presenting her removal as a medical matter while the government detains its opponents.

Confinement and Escape

At the hospital, Anne is held for nearly twenty-four hours, straitjacketed and described by the authorities as a mental patient in the care of Army psychiatrists. The account establishes her confinement as coercive rather than voluntary: with assistance from Lindbergh loyalists inside the Secret Service, she manages to escape. Walter Reed is therefore not merely a place of treatment in this episode, but the setting in which the administration’s attempt to incapacitate her becomes visible.

From Hospital to Public Resistance

Beginning at nine the following morning, Anne’s voice is broadcast from a transmitter hidden somewhere in Washington, D.C. She calls for the disarming of the National Guard, the withdrawal of military units from cities, the release of detainees, and the restoration of the rights of citizens and the press. At noon she announces that she will return to live with her children at the White House, directly defying the acting president. She returns there early that evening. The hospital episode gives the broadcast its immediate stakes: the speaker is not addressing the crisis from a secure public platform, but after escaping a place where officials had confined her and contested her capacity to act.
