The Power of the Dog (Thomas Savage Edition)

Random House is presented as an international publishing group connected both to the editorial history of Thomas Savage’s The Power of the Dog and to the organization of Vintage’s American and British imprints. The references show a group with distinct publishing operations as well as a wider international structure.

Editorial Connection

Before The Power of the Dog appeared in 1967, Savage’s editor at Random House asked him to make changes to the novel, which he refused. The book was ultimately published by Little, Brown and Company in Boston. This episode places Random House in the novel’s publication history as the publisher whose requested revisions Savage declined, rather than as the imprint that issued the finished book.

Relationship to Vintage Books

Vintage Books was founded in the United States in 1954 by Alfred A. Knopf as a paperback home for authors published by his company. Vintage UK launched in 1990 and operated independently from its American counterpart; nevertheless, both imprints were part of the international publishing group Random House. The distinction is significant: the two Vintage operations had separate identities, while belonging to a shared larger organization.

The UK Publishing List

Vintage UK was initially created to publish paperback editions of books acquired by established hardback imprints in the Random House Group, including Jonathan Cape, Chatto & Windus, and Hutchinson. Its list later expanded to include books from other imprints, works by major authors of the past under Vintage Classics, and fiction and nonfiction by influential contemporary writers. In 2012, Vintage Children’s Classics was launched as a further extension of that list. These details place Random House not only in Savage’s editorial history but also within the group structure supporting a broad and developing UK publishing program.
