La Jolla Cemetery

The Power of the Dog

La Jolla Cemetery is the site of Nora Hayden’s grave and the destination of a daily floral tribute arranged by Don Adán Barrera. In the account of Nora’s death, the cemetery becomes a place where private mourning persists alongside Adán’s conviction that her reported accident concealed a killing by Art Keller.

Nora’s Burial

After Nora was reported dead, Adán initially refused to believe the news. He was shown an obituary stating that American authorities said she had died in a car accident while driving home from Ensenada, and that her body had been returned to California for burial. The closed casket deepened Adán’s suspicion: he believed it concealed the fact that Keller had murdered her.

Adán held a funeral for Nora in Badiraguato, where a cross bearing her photograph was carried through the village and musicians sang corridos in her honor. Her grave at La Jolla Cemetery is thus part of a story of mourning that reaches beyond the California burial: Adán also commemorates her publicly in his home village.

The Daily Flowers

Every day, flowers appear on Nora’s grave at La Jolla Cemetery. Adán has arranged a standing order with a Mexican florist, who is instructed to bring the best flowers and assured that the bill will be paid. The recurring delivery makes the grave a continuing focus of his remembrance rather than a place visited only for a funeral or anniversary.

The flowers give Adán a measure of comfort, but they do not resolve his grief. He remains dissatisfied until he has avenged Nora, linking the daily act of remembrance to his continuing pursuit of Keller.

A Place of Mourning and Vengeance

The cemetery’s significance in Adán’s story lies in the contrast between a quiet, repeated gesture and an unresolved demand for retaliation. Flowers are placed at the grave each day, while Adán’s belief about Nora’s death keeps her burial connected to his conflict with Keller. La Jolla Cemetery therefore marks both the persistence of his mourning and the limit of the comfort that remembrance can provide.
