Rancho Méndez

The Power of the Dog

Rancho Méndez is the household setting where Fabián Martínez’s visits to Güero Méndez turn a concealed attraction to Pilar into a dangerous affair. Its significance lies in the collision of domestic life and criminal strategy: Fabián is welcomed as a familiar visitor while carrying out a plan he believes may have originated with powerful figures in the Barrera circle.

Setting and Visits

Weeks after an earlier visit, Fabián arrives at Rancho Méndez feeling physically strained and guilty about his desire for Güero’s wife. Güero greets him with an embrace; Pilar comes out of the house carrying the baby and with her young daughter, Claudia, beside her. She presents Fabián to Claudia as her uncle, giving his visit the appearance of family familiarity even as he privately recognizes the impropriety of his feelings.

The house’s living room becomes the setting for the first kiss between Fabián and Pilar. When Güero leaves them alone to take a phone call, they are standing by the fire; the moment turns their attraction into an actual secret between them. The domestic setting, with Güero elsewhere in the house and the children part of the household, makes the risk inseparable from the ordinary circumstances of the visit.

Affair and Strategic Stakes

Their involvement continues through furtive kisses, embraces, touches, and exchanged glances. Fabián understands that the affair is dangerous: he believes Güero would kill them if he discovered it. Pilar assesses the likely consequence differently, suggesting that Güero would kill Fabián but eventually forgive her; her response carries an undertone of sadness rather than simple reassurance.

The affair unfolds alongside a broader plan. Fabián has been told the plan by Raúl, but suspects that it came from Adán, and perhaps from Miguel Ángel Barrera as well. He is carrying it out while growing closer to Pilar, so the visits combine personal risk with an operation whose origins and purpose remain only partly clear in this account.

Departure and Narrative Significance

After months, Fabián returns to Tijuana, finds Raúl, and tells him the deal is done. The sequence links the concealed relationship at Rancho Méndez to a larger arrangement without establishing that the affair itself is the deal’s full substance. The ranch is therefore more than a backdrop: it is where Fabián’s private attachment and his participation in a dangerous plan advance together, under the threat of Güero’s discovery.
