Scripps Mercy Hospital

The Power of the Dog

Scripps Mercy Hospital is the destination of Gloria Barrera’s medical emergency and the setting for Don Adán Barrera’s urgent return to his family. The hospital’s quiet parking lot and eighth-floor hallway stand in stark contrast to the arrest he fears, making the place a point where his fugitive life meets a private family crisis.

Gloria’s Medical Emergency

Gloria is taken to Scripps Mercy Hospital after a stroke. Her condition is linked to pressure on her carotid artery; Lucía found her unconscious in her bedroom, and emergency medical technicians could not revive her. Gloria is placed on life support while tests are conducted, but the prognosis is not hopeful.

When Lucía tells Adán where Gloria is, he insists that he will come that night or, at the latest, the following morning. Lucía warns that Gloria may not recognize him, but Adán says that he will know whether he is there. The exchange makes the hospital a destination he chooses for his own need to be present, even when his daughter may be unable to respond.

Arrival and Reunion

After receiving directions from people he encounters on the way, Adán drives for fifty minutes and reaches the hospital parking lot. He imagines that agents may be waiting to arrest him, but no one emerges from a car; there are no DEA agents in blue windbreakers. Instead, the lot is marked by a sad, eerie quiet.

Adán enters the hospital and learns that Gloria’s room is on the eighth floor. In the hallway, he finds Lucía hunched on a bench, crying. He puts his arms around her and asks whether he is too late. The hospital brings the spouses together at the moment of their daughter’s crisis, after Adán has crossed the distance while fearing that the journey could end in arrest.

Narrative Significance

The hospital scene turns Adán’s movement from a fugitive’s imagined danger toward the immediate reality of family loss. His expected confrontation with law enforcement does not happen; what awaits him is Lucía’s grief and the uncertain condition of Gloria. Scripps Mercy Hospital thus serves not merely as the site of treatment but as the place where Adán’s insistence on being present is tested against the possibility that he has arrived too late.
