Scripps clinics

The Power of the Dog

The Scripps clinics are the San Diego medical setting where Gloria Barrera receives specialist care for her fatal, incurable condition. Her worsening health draws Lucía and Adán Barrera into an urgent reunion and leads Art Keller to wait for Adán in the hospital parking lot, bringing the family crisis into the novel’s law-enforcement conflict.

Setting and Medical Context

A little over four years before the final events, Gloria’s health takes a turn for the worse. She was born with cystic lymphangioma, a condition affecting her head, face, and throat that the narrative describes as both eventually fatal and incurable. With Adán’s blessing, his then-wife, Lucía, takes their twelve-year-old daughter from Mexico to San Diego, where the Scripps clinics house the best specialists in the world.

The clinics mark the limits of Adán’s wealth and influence. He can arrange access to elite medical care, but the specialists cannot offer Gloria a normal life or halt the fatal course of her illness. The setting makes that powerlessness concrete: the family has reached the place best equipped to help, yet the prognosis remains desperate.

Family Crisis and Art Keller’s Presence

A month after Lucía brings Gloria to San Diego, she calls Adán at his safe house in Mexico and tells him to come immediately; doctors say Gloria may have only days, perhaps hours. Adán crosses the border concealed in the trunk of a specially outfitted car. The narrative then places Art Keller waiting for him in the hospital parking lot, linking the medical emergency to their pursuit and confrontation.

Narrative Significance

The Scripps clinics are more than a treatment location: they are the destination that draws Adán out of hiding. Gloria’s illness creates an urgent reason for him to risk the border crossing, while the hospital setting gives Art the opportunity to intercept him. The clinics therefore connect the private stakes of a child’s failing health with the public conflict between a fugitive drug lord and the lawman pursuing him.
