North Sea
The RadleysThe North Sea is an offshore setting associated with two sharply contrasting uses: the exhilaration of flight after drinking blood and the concealment of a boy’s body. Its distance from land makes it a threshold between open movement and the hidden consequences of violence.
Setting and Flight
In one flight passage, a vampire travels beyond land and out above the North Sea. From the air, villages and market towns below become clusters of light; farther out, the view opens into sea without the dark shadows of boats. The passage presents the location as remote and exposed, far from ordinary life on land.
The flight is linked to blood’s effect on thought and action. The vampire gives in to the rush of speed and the feeling of being intensely present. The North Sea thus becomes more than a point on the route: it is the setting for an episode in which the character experiences freedom from the past and future, while that exhilaration remains inseparable from blood and predatory instinct.
Offshore Disposal
The sea also figures in Peter Radley’s attempt to keep a killing undiscovered. He tells Helen Radley that he flew a long way offshore before releasing the boy’s body into the water. Helen treats the body as the ultimate proof of what happened and reasons that, without it, the police are unlikely to suspect Clara Radley of killing him or of being a vampire.
That calculation does not erase every trace. Helen recognizes that Clara’s DNA and saliva may remain, and she worries that the family has left tire tracks they would once have cleared away. The North Sea removes the most decisive evidence, but the scene preserves the unease of an imperfect concealment.
Narrative Significance
The two appearances place flight’s exhilaration beside the practical aftermath of violence. In one, the sea offers distance and a heightened sense of aliveness; in the other, that same distance serves as a means of hiding a body. The North Sea’s remoteness therefore carries opposing meanings: escape from ordinary limits and an effort to evade accountability.
