Federal authorities raid Bruiser Stone’s office and indict his associates

The Rainmaker

The raid on Bruiser Stone’s offices turns a day of uncertainty into a public federal case. Agents take control of the firm’s premises, and indictments alleging more than a hundred counts follow. The investigation reaches businesses associated with Stone and Prince Thomas, while the two men evade the authorities and leave Rudy Baylor and his former colleagues unsure what will happen next.

The Raid and Its Immediate Aftermath

Just after midnight, federal agents raid the offices where Rudy had worked. By the next morning, the premises are locked under court order. Employees may enter and leave, but they are not permitted to remove anything. The previous day, uncertainty had already spread through the office: Stone and Thomas could not be found, and colleagues compared their last contacts with Stone, trying to determine whether anything had signaled trouble. The fear that the office might be monitored adds to their caution. Rudy and Deck Shifflet eventually leave through a rear door for lunch; neither will return to the building.

At 3:20 a.m., Deck calls Rudy with news of the raid and Stone’s departure from town. Thomas has vanished as well. Deck reports that agents are likely to want to speak with everyone who worked at the firm. Later, when the noon news report shows agents guarding the former office, the raid becomes a visible seizure rather than a rumor. The broadcast says staff can still enter but cannot take property away.

Indictments and Seized Businesses

The indictments arrive after sunrise. A television report announces more than a hundred counts against Stone, Thomas, Willie McSwane, and others. The allegations concern three clubs, including Vixens, which federal agents have also seized. The report shows arrests of policemen and footage connected with another topless club, while the U.S. Attorney publicly announces the indictments. Arrest warrants have been issued, but neither Stone nor Thomas is in custody; an agent says investigators believe the men have fled the area.

The seizure extends to Yogi’s, which the report identifies as Thomas’s headquarters. Its doors are chained, guards are posted outside, and agents have found no cash there. The arrest of the business’s ordinary operations and the empty-handed search give the coverage a sharper edge: Thomas is presented as a powerful local figure, yet his premises are now under federal control and he is gone.

Flight and Consequences

The raid changes the status of Stone’s firm at once. Rudy and Deck have established new offices, but some of Deck’s files came from work Stone had assigned him, including an insurance matter that remained in Deck’s office. Rudy suspects there may be other files in the box that Deck removed from the old office, though he does not ask about them. They both worry that investigators will question them, even as Deck says they know nothing and took no files that would interest the authorities.

The news also gives the case a second, unresolved thread: Stone and Thomas are not merely subjects of indictments but men who have disappeared before the warrants can be served. Rudy’s concern for Thomas persists despite the rumors surrounding his cash and businesses; he regards him as a friend and hopes he remains safe. The episode therefore closes not with arrests or explanations, but with a seized office, a watched restaurant, and the two central figures still beyond reach.
