Rudy refuses to solicit grieving families after the boat disaster
The RainmakerRudy refuses to solicit grieving families after a boat disaster, rejecting an opportunity to pursue legal clients while the victims’ relatives are still gathered at the river. His refusal separates him from Deck Shifflet, who moves toward the crowd to seek cases, and gives the scene its sharp contrast between grief and the business of legal solicitation.
The Disaster’s Aftermath
At the river, families and friends wait as rescuers search the water and recover bodies from the paddle wheeler. The police lieutenant identifies one victim, Melanie Dobbins; the announcement brings grief to her family, while others watching the search feel relief that their own bad news has not yet come. Rudy later learns that twenty-one young people survived after being drawn into an air pocket.
The Solicitation
As the crowd remains gathered near the water, lawyers with small white business cards edge toward the bereaved, hoping to obtain cases. Their approach turns the disaster’s aftermath into an occasion for competition over clients. Deck recognizes what is happening before Rudy does and nods toward a place closer to the families. Rudy refuses to move toward them.
Diverging Choices
Deck slips into the crowd to seek business; Rudy turns his back on the river and runs through downtown Memphis. The action is conveyed through that physical separation: Deck enters the scene of potential solicitation, while Rudy leaves it. In this moment, Rudy will not join the effort to approach families in the immediate aftermath of their loss.
