Rudy tries to confront Jonathan Lake in person

The Rainmaker

Rudy tries to confront Jonathan Lake in person after learning that Lake has rejected his job at the firm and that Barry X. Lancaster has contacted Dot Black about the Black family’s case. The confrontation fails: Rudy cannot reach Lake, and the attempt ends with a security guard ordering him away. The following morning, police return to the episode with news that the guard is dead, turning Rudy’s angry visit into a matter of police questioning.

Causes and Stakes

Barry tells Rudy that Jonathan Lake will not approve him for the position. Lake objects to hiring a lawyer for a paralegal role, fearing that Rudy would try to force his way into an associate position; Barry says he agrees with Lake’s decision. The rejection lands amid Rudy’s concern that Barry is approaching Dot Black and Donny Ray about signing documents, after telling Dot that Rudy no longer works at the firm. Rudy suspects that Lake and Barry intend to take over the Black family’s case, and demands to speak with Lake rather than accept Barry’s explanation.

The Attempt at the Warehouse

Rudy drives to the Lake Law Firm Warehouse at night. With lights on inside and several cars in the lot, the building appears occupied, but nobody answers when he pounds on the front door. He tries another door on the north side and an emergency exit at the rear, then calls out to Barry beneath his office window. Barry’s lights are on, but he does not respond. Rudy returns to the front entrance and continues knocking; he never gets inside or speaks with Jonathan Lake.

A uniformed security guard approaches from the shadows and tells Rudy to leave before the police are called. Rudy is frightened when the guard grips his shoulder, but shakes off the contact and walks away when ordered to go. His departure ends the attempt without a meeting with Lake or Barry.

Police Inquiry and Aftermath

The next morning, two plainclothes officers question Rudy at his apartment about Jonathan Lake, the location of the office, and Rudy’s visit the previous night. Rudy gives the time as between nine and ten, explains that he wanted to speak with Lake, and says the locked doors prevented him from entering. He denies trying to break in or returning after midnight, and points the officers to the security guard as a witness to his departure.

The officers tell Rudy that the guard is dead. Their questions about the visit and the time after midnight make the news ominous, though the encounter itself establishes only that Rudy left when the guard instructed him to. The episode links Rudy’s professional and legal crisis: his attempt to confront the men he believes are taking the Black family’s case is followed immediately by police scrutiny over a death at the site.
