Demon Lord Ascension
The Reincarnated Demon King's Host Just Wants to Live in Peace, But the Hero Won't Leave Him AloneDemon Lord Ascension is a demonic advancement attained through the mass slaughter of innocents, transforming a demon into a vastly more powerful being with wings. It is both a change in the individual and a brutal institution: the path to greater power is defined not by mastery alone, but by killing on a mass scale. Malthios’s ascent makes that rule physical and immediate, as mana surges through him and wings tear through his clothing and armor.
Place in the Demonic Hierarchy
Demons have limited routes to increased power, and their society distinguishes rank through magical capacity. Demonkin occupy the lowest level, with little or no mana or magic, though they can serve as common soldiers. A Demon Lord can sponsor a Demonkin by granting them mana; those who survive the painful gift become Novices, whose varying magical potential and considerable physical prowess make them suited to combat. Demon Lords stand above Novices: they possess immense mana and wings, gained through a mass slaughter of innocents.
Demon Lord Ascension is distinct from the further transformation into a Demon King. Only Demon Lords know how a demon may ascend to that greatest form, and even knowledge of the method does not make the result automatic: the demon must be worthy of the power. The account also notes that no Demon King had existed for many years. Ascension to Demon Lord is therefore a defined, if horrific, threshold in the hierarchy, while the step beyond it remains more restricted and uncertain.
A Promotion with a Price
Malthios’s earliest life offers a view of the system before his ascent. His parents abandoned him while he was still young, and he survived by stealing food in a demon village. A Demon Lord eventually gathered the children who had survived his gift of mana and trained them as Novices. Malthios received that gift from Fulton. Though the process was among the most painful experiences he had endured, it provided regular meals and a bed, sharply contrasting with the deprivation that preceded it. Training brought its own hardships, including contempt from higher-level Novices, but the hierarchy offered a route out of street survival only by drawing its recruits into a violent order.
The expectation of advancement was made explicit when Commander Ovrtu told Malthios and the other four members of his group that they were ready to ascend. They had expected to wait at least another couple of years. When Malthios asked what the next step required, Ovrtu described the task plainly: each had to slaughter a great many innocents. The abruptness of the exchange makes the rule’s violence part of its official procedure. A commander presents mass killing as the ordinary qualification for promotion, not as an aberration or a failure of the system.
The Ascent in the Mortal City
The five were sent to a large mortal city with orders to kill every living thing they saw. During the massacre, Malthios learned how the threshold announced itself. After he killed the last mortal around him, his clothes and sword coated in blood, his magic seemed to explode through his body. His mana swelled to twice its former size before releasing its pressure as two feathered wings unfolded from his shoulders, ripping through his armor and shirt.
The transformation affected more than his appearance. His joints and fangs ached, and his muscles felt stretched and sore, as if he were undergoing a sudden growth spurt. Not yet trusting his new wings, he stumbled toward the city’s front gate. The scene connects the abstract promise of immense mana to the bodily cost of acquiring it: power arrives as a violent surge, while the new wings make the changed status visible.
Kamil was already waiting at the gate. When she saw Malthios, she ran to him; her own wings were white and speckled with red-brown, and she was in a similarly bloodied state. She embraced him without hesitation, and the others were there as well: Torq supporting Foras, with Aym close behind. Their shared transformation marks the ascent as a collective turning point for the five, though each has reached it through the same lethal requirement.
Recognition and Moral Cost
The group’s first responses do not treat the slaughter as an uncomplicated triumph. Aym remarked that the killing was what had felt excessive, while Torq described the mana surge as briefly nauseating. Kamil agreed that mortals had some things better. Malthios turned away with an unfamiliar feeling in his chest and urged the group to leave. Their reaction distinguishes the exhilaration of gaining a new rank from the means used to gain it: the ascent succeeds, but the killings remain a source of discomfort rather than disappearing beneath the reward.
The rule has consequences beyond the five new Demon Lords. In the wider conflict, remnants of the Demon King’s army continue to threaten the land under the leadership of the remaining Demon Lords, while the Hero’s party protects ordinary people. The institution that creates powerful demonic leaders thus also sustains a military order in which slaughter is the price of advancement. Malthios’s ascension is significant not simply because it gives him wings and greater mana, but because the people who undergo the transformation can recognize the system’s brutality even as they are made more powerful by it.
