Khal and Veiv Leave Leafel
The Reincarnated Demon King's Host Just Wants to Live in Peace, But the Hero Won't Leave Him AloneKhal and Veiv Leave Leafel marks the practical and emotional dissolution of the Hero’s party as a traveling unit. Veiv’s pregnancy has advanced so far that she has trouble walking and her stomach is nearly at bursting point, making departure both a necessary journey home and a sign that the group’s years of shared quests have entered a different phase. Khal, Veiv, and Cargo leave Leafel together, while Theo, Luc, Wicker, and Micah remain behind to send them on their way.
The Departure from Leafel
Khal’s departure takes place a few days after Theo and Luc’s confrontation with the court and their decision to build a life outside the Heroic duty system. Veiv cannot easily travel on foot, so Khal gently lifts her onto her pony. Theo, Wicker, and Micah open a portal to carry the travelers home, an act that would normally be nearly impossible for only three magic users. The portal becomes feasible because Malthios, the former Demon King, lends them both his mana and his technique. His power, once associated with war and domination, is therefore redirected toward an intimate act of communal care: helping a pregnant couple reach home safely.
The scene is not framed as a triumphant expedition. There is no new quest waiting beyond the portal and no promise that the old party will reform. Theo asks Khal and Veiv to visit when their babies are older, and Veiv promises that they will. Her promise also confirms a new bond: Theo and Luc will be the children’s godparents. The announcement surprises both of them, and Theo feels some dread because he remains unenthusiastic about children, while Luc is moved almost to tears when Khal embraces him.
Family, Memory, and the Children to Come
The couple’s future is made concrete through the names of the unborn twins. Khal says that one child will be named Denzel, after his father. The other will be called Acul, a name that is Luca backward. Veiv confirms the joke, and Luc begins crying in earnest as Khal pats his shoulder. The naming combines ancestry, romance, and friendship: one child carries Khal’s family memory, while the other carries a playful mark of Luc’s place in the couple’s chosen family.
This family future also contrasts with the pressure placed on Luc by Hero Eliza. Julius previously warned Theo that Eliza wanted Luc to continue the Hero bloodline and sire the next Hero, a future that could not be achieved through either of Luc’s former male relationships. Luc instead chose a peaceful life with Theo and argued that people born with the Hero’s gift should be able to choose their own fate rather than remain bound to duty. Khal and Veiv’s departure does not resolve that institutional conflict through debate; it answers it by displaying another form of inheritance, one created through friendship, guardianship, chosen names, and mutual care rather than compulsory succession.
The Farewell Scene
The farewell gathers the remaining friends around the portal. Theo, Luc, Wicker, and Micah stand and wave as Khal leads his horse and Veiv’s pony through the opening, with Cargo bringing up the rear. The magical light fades after the portal closes. Wicker leans against Theo, while Luc puts an arm around Theo’s shoulders, turning the group’s physical arrangement into a quiet image of support after separation.
Cargo’s last exchange with Theo preserves the party’s familiar humor. He nudges Theo’s leg and tells him not to do anything stupid, immediately qualifying the warning as anything else stupid. Theo responds fondly and pats the hog’s head, acknowledging that he will miss him. The banter prevents the farewell from becoming solemn pageantry, but it does not erase the grief beneath it. Affection survives here through teasing, touch, promises, and the knowledge that ordinary companionship will no longer be continuously available.
The Hero’s Party Scattered
Theo recognizes a strange grief in the moment because the party that had been together for years is now dispersed across the land. Khal and Veiv are beginning a family. Avery is studying and is expected to divide his time between a laboratory and a library. Bryony is at home caring for her brother as he slowly fades. Emi’s future remains uncertain to Theo. Wicker has become the head of the Leafel adventurer guild post and now has Micah to teach. The departure therefore belongs to a larger pattern: each member’s next life is defined by a different responsibility rather than by a shared road.
Theo and Luc remain in Leafel, but their future is no longer organized around demon hunting or the construction of additions to their home. Theo will continue as the village healer, identifying that work as his duty and purpose. He does not know how Luc will spend his time now that the immediate demands of heroic combat have ended, yet he looks forward to discovering that future with him. The uncertainty is important: the event closes the era of compulsory adventure without pretending that a complete replacement life has already been mapped.
Narrative Significance
Khal and Veiv Leave Leafel transforms separation into evidence of survival. The Hero’s party does not remain intact as a symbolic unit, and its dispersal carries genuine grief, but the members do not vanish into failure. They study, care for family, teach, heal, and prepare for children. Even Cargo’s departure is accompanied by affection rather than rupture.
The event also completes the movement from imposed roles toward chosen relationships. Luc was once defined by the fate of the Hero, while Theo feared that disclosure of his nature would cost him every friendship and place of safety. By the time Khal and Veiv leave, the group’s future is no longer governed solely by bloodlines, conquest, or institutional duty. A former Demon King contributes magic to a family’s journey; two former adventurers become godparents; and the former Hero begins an undefined life beside the man he loves. The portal closes on the party’s shared past, but it opens the possibility of a broader, less compulsory understanding of home.
