The Hero’s Party Battles the Demon-Made Dire Wolves

The Reincarnated Demon King's Host Just Wants to Live in Peace, But the Hero Won't Leave Him Alone

The Hero’s Party Battles the Demon-Made Dire Wolves turns a concealed threat on the road into a test of the party’s coordination and trust. When Theo and Wicker are cut off in the forest by a pack of magically made predators, survival depends first on escaping the swarm, then on recognizing how its leader controls the fight.

Surveillance and the First Assault

The danger arrives after a day of unease. Theo senses that someone is watching the party and asks Malthios whether he can detect anything. Malthios confirms that someone is concealing herself, and says he has a good idea who it is, but advises waiting until she is off guard. The hidden watcher remains unidentified in this moment; the party’s attention soon shifts from the unseen presence to a more immediate danger.

That evening, Theo goes into the woods to forage with Wicker and Khal. Luc is unusually clingy, reluctant to let Theo leave with them, while Bryony hunts small game and Khal moves ahead through the forest. Theo and Wicker are collecting roots as the light fades when Wicker suddenly grabs Theo’s forearm. Yellow eyes shine from the undergrowth. Malthios recognizes the attackers as Dire wolves, another demonic creation, and the ambush is already close enough that the pair have little time to prepare.

Theo shouts for Khal to run for help, and he and Wicker flee away from camp. The pursuing wolves are huge, dark grey, and marked with red demon sigils on their foreheads; their numbers are too great to count. Trees and undergrowth keep them from surrounding the pair at once, but Theo’s light sword feels inadequate against so many attackers. Wicker calls for a plan and, without pausing to explain it, climbs a pine tree. Theo uses a fallen log to launch himself onto a branch, driving his sword into the trunk for leverage. When a wolf lunges after him, its fangs tear into his calf; his magic flares in the dark as he pulls the blade free and braces for another attack. Before the wolf can reach him again, pine cones fly past and strike it, buying Theo a moment to hold his position above the forest floor.

The Pack’s Control and the Counterattack

The wolves do not follow Theo and Wicker up the pine. At least thirty gather beneath them, waiting rather than clawing at the trunk, until a still larger leader steps into the clearing. Bigger than a shire horse and marked by a white scruff, it raises its head through the branches. Malthios sharply warns Theo not to look at it. The warning proves crucial: an arrow strikes the leader’s hind leg, and six figures emerge from the undergrowth, but Avery’s eyes turn yellow like the wolves’ as he points a hand at the tree. Bryony shouts for him to stop. Theo and Wicker leap just before Avery’s lightning bolt splinters the pine’s top.

The fall becomes a rescue rather than a second disaster. Luc catches Theo in his arms, while Khal catches Wicker, who lands perched on his shoulder. Bryony has already knocked Avery unconscious with her bow. As the others engage the pack, Theo kneels beside Avery and heals him; when Avery comes around confused, Theo warns him that the leader’s gaze can bring him under its control. The danger is therefore not only the wolves’ size and numbers: the pack can turn a fighter’s strength against the people he came to protect.

The party answers that threat by dividing its work. Luc takes the leader, while Theo uses his light sword to nick the wolves’ leg tendons, crippling them for the others to finish. When a wolf claws Khal’s arm, Theo heals the wound within seconds. But Luc is pinned beneath the leader’s paw, his sword beyond reach, and its jaws snap above him. Before Theo can intervene, someone seizes him by the hood; Luc grips the wolf’s upper and lower jaws with his bare hands, breaks them, and gets to his feet to deliver the killing blow. With their leader dead, the remaining wolves flee, leaving a clearing strewn with corpses and a smoking, splintered pine. Luc returns to the group, and the party heads back to camp together.

Aftermath and the Story of the Fight

Back at camp, the danger gave way to the practical work of making a meal. Cargo had stayed behind with the belongings and several magical wards, and, to everyone’s surprise, had not eaten the deer Khal had hunted. Too exhausted to butcher and cook it, the group instead boiled water and made a filling soup from the roots and mushrooms Theo and Wicker had gathered before the attack, seasoning it with salt and pepper and adding crumbled traveler’s biscuit, which softened into an improvised dumpling. As they ate, Wicker explained the rest of the party’s plans. The fight thus ended not with a formal victory but with the companions regrouping around food, shared labor, and the plans that would carry their journey onward.

Later, at a gathering in Leafel, Wicker recounted the party’s adventures, including the dire-wolf fight, alongside the bandit ambush, their encounter with ghosts, and their last battle with the demons. Theo did not add details about being captured by Tyraz, which he did not wish to revisit. The contrast gives the wolf encounter a place in the party’s shared account of its quest while also marking a boundary around a more painful experience: the fight could be told as one episode among many, even as the captivity that followed remained difficult for Theo to speak about.

The Uneasy Bond Behind the Warning

The danger also exposes a practical form of trust between Theo and Malthios, whose connection is neither voluntary intimacy nor simple obedience. Their shared mind lets Malthios recognize the threat and warn Theo in time; Theo follows the warning despite their history of conflict, in which Malthios’s attempts to control him brought debilitating headaches and threats. The moment does not resolve their antagonism, but it shows how survival can depend on knowledge passing across a bond both resent: Malthios supplies the warning, and Theo chooses to act on it.
