Friends Against Custom
A group forms by defending one another
Kamil, Aym, Torq, and Foras gather around Malthios after an encounter with bullying Novices. They fight as a team and give him a place among them without demanding that he prove his usefulness first.
The Pentagram names itself
Kamil celebrates their group as the Pentagram, and the five begin to understand themselves as allies rather than isolated competitors. Their shared confidence helps Malthios use power he had been afraid to touch.
The group contradicts the belief that demons cannot form lasting friendships. Their bond is imperfect, noisy, and sometimes combative, but it gives each member something to fight for besides rank.
Torq and Foras

Torq and Foras
Affection in a harsh society
Torq and Foras are devoted to one another and are openly affectionate with each other around their friends. Malthios notices that their intimacy differs from the casual sexual behavior he expects among demons.
A possibility Malthios cannot name
Watching the couple makes Malthios wonder whether demons are capable of love. Their relationship gives him an example of care that is particular and enduring, rather than a simple exchange of power.
The couple’s affection does not change demon society by itself. It does, however, complicate Malthios’s assumption that tenderness is impossible for his kind.
Malthios and Aym Draw Close

Malthios and Aym Draw Close
Desire becomes personal
Aym confronts Malthios about keeping distance from the group and asks whether he is really avoiding intimacy with Kamil. Malthios realizes that Aym wants him, and the two begin an intense sexual relationship.
Tenderness after passion
Afterward, Malthios hopes the encounter will happen again and worries about Kamil teasing him. His desire for Aym is not simply anonymous pleasure; it is shaped by years of familiarity and trust.
The relationship adds a private intimacy to the Pentagram’s public solidarity. It also makes Aym’s later death more than the loss of a comrade: it is the loss of someone Malthios had allowed close.
Five Against the Hero

Five Against the Hero
Loyalty chooses danger
When the Hero appears, the Pentagram refuses to leave Malthios behind. They coordinate their retreat and fight together even though the odds are poor.
Sacrifice separates the friends
Aym, Torq, Foras, and Kamil die as they help Malthios escape. Kamil smiles as she sends him away, leaving him with the memory of her courage at the moment he loses her.
Their deaths are not proof that their bond was foolish. Their loyalty gives Malthios a life beyond the battlefield, though he will spend years interpreting that survival as a debt to vengeance.
Friends Remembered at Last

Friends Remembered at Last
Grief given room
With the old war ending, Malthios allows memories of the Pentagram to surface without using them only to justify revenge. He recalls their voices, jokes, cooking, and the ways they cared for one another.
A promise carried forward
Malthios decides to honor Kamil, Aym, Torq, and Foras by ending the organized violence that shaped their lives. Theo’s friendship gives him the chance to remember them as more than the reason he became Demon King.
The loss remains permanent, but its meaning changes. Malthios can carry grief into a peaceful future rather than keep sacrificing the living to punish the past.
