Dire wolves

The Reincarnated Demon King's Host Just Wants to Live in Peace, But the Hero Won't Leave Him Alone

Dire wolves are portrayed as giant predators whose strength turns a journey into a perilous group battle. Their leader’s attack briefly puts Luc at the pack’s mercy, but the leader’s death breaks the wolves’ advance and sends the survivors fleeing.

Form and Threat

The encounter presents the wolves at a scale that makes Theo’s light sword seem inadequate for a direct fight. He instead uses it to nick the tendons in their legs, crippling opponents so his companions can finish them. The pack’s leader poses a more immediate danger: it pins Luc beneath a giant paw, with its jaws snapping over him and his sword out of reach.

The wolves are also dangerous to the rest of the party. One slashes Khal’s arm with its claws, though Khal kills it with an axe cleaved through its skull. The battle leaves the clearing strewn with wolf corpses and a pine tree broken into smoking splinters.

The Pack’s Defeat

As the fight unfolds, Luc breaks through the wolves’ line and faces their leader. When the leader pins him, Luc grabs its upper and lower jaws with his bare hands and breaks them. He gets back to his feet, recovers his sword, and delivers the killing blow. The wounded leader’s defeat changes the battle at once: the few wolves still standing flee, leaving the party in the clearing.

Theo’s role in the fight is both tactical and protective. He uses his sword to disable wolves rather than trying to overpower them, and, after Khal is wounded, heals the claw marks in seconds before turning back to the battle. Luc’s rescue of himself from the leader and Theo’s healing of Khal show how the party’s different abilities answer distinct dangers in the same encounter.

Wider Context

After the battle, the party encounters no one on the main road. Veiv raises the possibility that the missing merchants may be connected to either the bandits or the Dire wolves, while Avery notes that merchants commonly travel that route. This is speculation rather than a confirmed effect of the wolves, but it shows that the pack’s attack has become part of the group’s assessment of danger on the road.
