Leafel Border Warding

The Reincarnated Demon King's Host Just Wants to Live in Peace, But the Hero Won't Leave Him Alone

Leafel Border Warding is the defensive patrol and sigil-marking operation through which Malthios helps secure Leafel’s county boundary. Using Theo’s knife to carve warning symbols into trees, he creates an alert network intended both to reveal approaching threats and to ward off demon creatures. The action is significant because the former Demon King, once the longtime enemy of Algeya’s people, begins converting his destructive power and knowledge into deliberate protection of Leafel.

Purpose and Background

The immediate purpose of the operation is explained when Hayden asks why the borders must be walked again. Malthios answers that the patrol is for “Setting up alerts,” and identifies a second function: the markings act as “a ward to demon creatures.” The sigils therefore combine surveillance with deterrence. They are not merely signs of ownership or routine boundary maintenance; they are an early-warning system designed to make an approaching danger perceptible before it reaches the village.

The work responds to a changed security situation. Leafel has occasionally experienced monster attacks, but its remote position has made it an unlikely target for bandits, which helps explain why the peaceful settlement has an adventurer guild post at all. Malthios now believes that the village’s circumstances will worsen because both he, the former Demon King, and a retired Hero reside there. Their presence may draw humans and other races seeking revenge or hoping to prove themselves against famous figures. Border warding is consequently an act of preparation for threats created not by Leafel’s ordinary life but by the exceptional people connected to it.

The Patrol and Its Method

Hayden, as the leader of the adventurer party and the person most familiar with Leafel and its defenses, guides Malthios around the boundary. Malthios would rather have learned from another member of the party, but Hayden’s authority and local knowledge make him the necessary instructor. Their cooperation is strained: Hayden’s questioning irritates Malthios, while Malthios’s impatience does not erase the practical value of the lesson.

Malthios carves each sigil into a tree with one of Theo’s knives. The choice of tool connects the defensive work to the shared life of Theo and Malthios: even while acting in his own capacity, Malthios relies on an object belonging to Theo. The boundary is not secured through a single spectacular display of magic. It is built through repeated physical marks placed along the landscape, making protection a distributed and sustained practice.

The patrol lasts for several hours, and when the recorded exchange occurs Malthios and Hayden are only halfway around Leafel’s county boundary. The unfinished circuit emphasizes the scale of the task. Protection requires time, repetition, and continued attention rather than a one-time gesture. Malthios’s insistence that Hayden cannot be everywhere at once gives the system its logic: the sigils extend the defenders’ reach so that Malthios can recognize when an unknown person or creature is drawing near.

Participants and Internal Tension

Hayden questions the need to walk the borders again, while Malthios responds curtly and continues the work. Hayden then reminds him that border patrol is precisely their reason for being there. Their exchange establishes a contrast between established local procedure and Malthios’s desire for a more comprehensive system. Hayden patrols because it is part of the settlement’s existing defense; Malthios wants the boundary marks to compensate for the limits of any individual patrol.

Theo remains present indirectly through Malthios’s shared bodily existence. During the hours-long patrol, Theo grows restless and wants to return to his Hero, yet he also agrees that the warding is a good idea. The operation therefore carries two simultaneous impulses: Theo’s desire for personal closeness and the shared recognition that Leafel needs protection. Malthios continues despite the emotional pull of returning, making the village’s safety a responsibility that can temporarily outweigh immediate comfort.

Consequences and Significance

The warding changes Malthios’s role in Leafel. He is no longer defined only by his former title and the danger associated with it. By helping establish alerts and magical defenses, he acts as a guardian of the village and anticipates the consequences of his presence there. The defensive marks also represent a reversal in the direction of his power: what once belonged to the enemy of Algeya’s people is now placed at the service of a peaceful human settlement.

The operation does not guarantee safety, nor does it remove the possibility of human or racial hostility. Its value lies in readiness. Malthios recognizes that Leafel’s apparent isolation may not protect it once outsiders learn who lives there, and he creates a means of detecting that danger before it becomes an attack. The boundary thus becomes both a literal defensive perimeter and a sign of changed allegiance. At the edge of Leafel, Malthios begins to turn regret and renewed purpose into an organized obligation to protect the home he has found.
