A Soul in the Cradle

A Soul in the Cradle
The spell survives its caster
Malthios awakens inside an infant host after using a prepared soul-transfer spell to escape death. He expects time to let him take the child’s body and resume his campaign against Algeya.
An unexpected restraint
Theo’s will proves stronger than the Demon King’s influence. Malthios cannot control the body or wield its magic without Theo’s consent, except when intense emotion creates an opening.
Their shared mind makes concealment impossible between them, but it does not make them allies. From the beginning, their survival is linked while their desires remain sharply opposed.
The Failed Escape

The Failed Escape
A prisoner inside the host
Malthios tries to steer Theo toward evil and responds to resistance with headaches, threats, and contempt. Theo’s refusal frustrates the ancient demon, who is trapped in a body he cannot independently command.
Survival complicates resentment
Theo sometimes feels Malthios’s power as frighteningly natural, especially when anger or fear makes transformation possible. He learns to suppress those surges, not because he trusts Malthios but because exposure could mean death.
The two become unwilling witnesses to each other’s thoughts. The arrangement prevents either from having a private inner life, laying the groundwork for intimacy and distrust to coexist.
A Conditional Truce

A Conditional Truce
A bargain for distance
Theo and Malthios agree that the Demon King will stop trying to seize control. In exchange, Theo will occasionally let him take the body after their training, provided he does nothing against Theo’s wishes.
A compromise shaped by fear
The terms are practical rather than affectionate. Theo wants distance from the capital and its Heroes; Malthios wants the possibility of moving and acting freely again.
The pact replaces constant struggle with an unstable form of cooperation. Neither party is free of the other, but each begins to treat the other’s boundaries as a reality that must be negotiated.
A Brother’s Confession

A Brother’s Confession
Fear beneath hostility
After Luc departs, Theo’s growing attachment frightens Malthios. The Demon King admits that he has been trying to keep the Hero away partly because he fears Theo will be hurt and partly because he fears being left behind.
The past returns as kinship
Malthios explains that Theo reminds him of Kamil and the other friends he lost. He no longer sees the host only as a prison; he wants Theo to be safe and happy as an older brother might.
The admission changes the emotional terms of their coexistence. Malthios’s attachment does not erase his past violence, but it allows Theo to answer him as a companion rather than merely a jailer.
Trust at the Trial

Trust at the Trial
The host opens the door
When Luc asks to speak with Malthios, Theo must choose whether to release control in a room full of people who fear and hate the Demon King. Malthios answers the Hero’s questions without attempting escape.
A shared future reconsidered
Malthios describes his care for Theo as familial and explains that he has no way to separate their souls. He also confirms that he has destroyed the organized demon forces and no longer seeks conquest.
The exchange gives Luc grounds to distinguish the host from the soul within him. It also shows that Malthios’s change is not merely Theo’s private belief: he is willing to risk judgment by speaking honestly.
