“We are one person”

The Reincarnated Demon King's Host Just Wants to Live in Peace, But the Hero Won't Leave Him Alone

“We are one person” is Malthios’s description of his bond with Theo: they share emotions and thoughts so intimately that he insists he cannot lie to Theo. The expression gives their involuntary coexistence a meaning beyond confinement, even as Theo answers that they are stuck with each other.

Meaning and Context

Malthios speaks the phrase while insisting that his care for Theo is genuine. Theo has called himself Malthios’s prison and challenges the idea that Malthios could care for him. In response, Malthios explains, “We are one person, Theo, we feel each other’s emotions, our very thoughts shared. I can’t lie to you.” The claim joins emotional closeness to an unusual form of access: Malthios presents their shared thoughts and feelings as the reason deception between them is impossible.

From Confinement to Connection

Theo’s answer, “We are stuck with each other,” retains the language of entrapment, but Malthios accepts the bond rather than resisting it. He says he would not have it otherwise, and describes how Theo has shown him worthwhile things in the world. The expression therefore holds two ideas together: their shared existence is not freely chosen, yet Malthios now values the person with whom he must share it. Their exchange recasts the prison image as a relationship marked by care and attachment.
