Vasili’s Rural Beginnings

Vasili’s Rural Beginnings
A life rooted in land
Vasili Arda is born into a farming family near Voditza and grows up working the land. His father also teaches him religion, language, and music, giving his childhood a close connection to both family and village life.
A future interrupted
The First World War draws Vasili into the Bulgarian Army as an ordnance handler. His experience at the front breaks the sheltered religious understanding in which he was raised.
The first remembered life
Vasili’s life later becomes one of the memory streams Evan inherits. Its language, music, and historical detail will provide both abilities and painful knowledge in Evan’s present.
War and Its Aftermath

War and Its Aftermath
A dangerous position
Vasili serves near the Cherna River as the Bulgarian front retreats. Captain Hoxa chooses to attack a French camp under cover of a storm, turning the night into an exhausting artillery battle.
Hoxa disappears
The bombardment continues through rain, incoming fire, and flooding. After dawn, the commander is missing, and the soldiers leave the position without knowing what became of him.
Faith changed by combat
Vasili returns from war unable to inhabit the same religious innocence as before. This rupture alters his relationship with his father and gives his remembered life a lasting moral weight.
Marriage and Collectivization

Marriage and Collectivization
A quiet partnership
Vasili marries Vanya and works the farm with her for many years. Their shared life is built around land and labor, but they have no children.
Property seized
After the war, Communist authorities demand that the couple surrender the farm and join the collective system. Their refusal brings imprisonment and separates them.
Loss carried forward
Vanya dies while incarcerated, while Vasili escapes. The loss turns a long rural life into one defined by dispossession, grief, and flight.
Exile in Istanbul

Exile in Istanbul
Crossing the border
After release from State Prison No. 4, Vasili walks out of Bulgaria and reaches Turkey. His escape leaves behind the farm and the life he had built with Vanya.
A changed city life
In Istanbul, he earns money carrying crates in open-air markets and smokes Lendts cigarettes. The city’s bustle and mixed cultures offer a stark contrast to the village he lost.
The memories survive
Vasili dies without knowing exactly how or when, but his experiences continue through Evan’s later memories. His exile supplies the language and historical clues that help Evan recognize Poppy’s test.
A Life Remembered

A Life Remembered
A second self emerges
Evan begins to experience Vasili’s memories as first-person scenes. The accumulated knowledge is vivid enough to provide language, music, and a sense of a different family.
Continuity unsettles identity
Evan can distinguish the remembered life from his present body, yet both occupy one continuous mental timeline. Rather than feeling enriched, he initially fears that he is losing his grasp on reality.
An inheritance with costs
Vasili’s memories help Evan find abilities and later prove his claim, but they also carry grief, conflict, and dislocation. The past does not remain safely past; it becomes part of who Evan must answer for.
