Evan Michaels–Poppy alliance
The Reincarnationist PapersThe Evan Michaels–Poppy alliance is a partnership of trust, shared risk, and hard bargaining, formed around the return of The Rendezvous. When Poppy finds Evan carrying the stolen painting, she could buy it from him outright; instead, she persuades him to continue with her and confront Samas together. At Samas’s beach home, she reveals that she has the painting, threatens to burn it to raise the price, and secures a twenty-million-dollar payment, half for each partner. Their alliance turns a potentially isolating theft into a joint negotiation—and makes trust, not merely possession, the decisive stake.
Foundations of Trust
Poppy’s place in Evan’s life extends beyond this transaction. She is a guide within Cognomina, the community of people who remember past lives, and has helped welcome Evan into a family whose continuity depends on members relying on one another. Its practical arrangements give that reliance material weight: a living designate safeguards the holdings of members who have died and returns them when those people are reborn and reappear. Ascension verifies identity, and a second designate can inherit the responsibility if the first dies. Poppy explains that this system has made the group close in some ways, because its members must depend on and trust one another.
She illustrates the arrangement through her own possessions. The home Evan has stayed in, the car he rode in, her other homes around the world, and her twenty-percent stake in a major glass manufacturer came to her from a benefactor who was, in another life, herself. Wealth can therefore survive the death of its holder through collective custody, even though the individual must die and return before reclaiming it. This is not simply a philosophical background to Evan and Poppy’s partnership: it is the social structure within which their trust becomes thinkable.
The welcome given to Evan also establishes a pattern of care expressed through concrete gifts. Poppy says that Cognomina has welcomed new members with gifts for centuries. Auda’s contribution is a five-thousand-dollar escrow, to remain unavailable until Evan returns in a new body, so that he will have something waiting for him. The gift is made by Auda, not Poppy, but Poppy’s role in the welcoming tradition helps place her alliance with Evan within a community that invests in his future beyond his present life.
The Offer in the Room
The immediate partnership begins in a dark room where Poppy is waiting in a chair beside the bed, a cigarette in one hand and a cane in the other. Evan smells smoke, reaches for his gun, and fumbles the pistol across the floor toward her before he has a firm grip on it. Poppy calmly points out that he has forgotten the cane. The mishap makes their positions briefly unstable: Evan has come armed, but she is already there, composed and in possession of the object he needs.
When he demands to know why she has come, Poppy identifies her purpose as vengeance. Evan assumes that he is the target. She corrects him: the vengeance is not for him, and she has come to help him. Her attention turns to the guitar case and the painting concealed inside it. She asks what Samas offered and suggests figures in the millions, showing that she understands the scale of the transaction Evan has entered and is prepared to intervene in it.
Poppy makes the alliance conditional not on obedience but on trust. She says she can protect Evan’s financial interest and offers to outbid Samas herself, even proposing to take the painting from him immediately. Accepting would let Evan leave with a fortune and no further obligation to the stolen work. He refuses that easier exit: he wants to see the matter through with Poppy. Her delighted response turns the choice into a shared venture, and she tells him to get his shoes because they are about to make a killing.
Trust Put to the Test
Their cooperation remains a choice Evan must renew. On the way to Samas’s home, Poppy reaches for the case. Evan’s first instinct is to protest: everything, he believes, depends on what happens next. He instead tells her that he is choosing to trust her. Poppy answers that she knows. The exchange is brief, but it marks a change from the room’s surprise and suspicion: Evan now gives her the case and accepts the risk of acting beside her.
At the house, the cello playing inside accompanies a cautious entrance. When Samas sees Poppy, his first response is to demand an explanation. She says that this is a question she very much wants to answer, then places the guitar on the railing and opens the case. She removes the canvas roll and unfurls it for him. Samas’s face changes as he realizes that Poppy, not Evan, has the long-awaited painting. The reveal gives her control of the negotiation and confirms that Evan’s decision to proceed with her has altered who holds the crucial leverage.
Poppy makes that leverage visible rather than relying on a claim about the painting’s value. She holds a lighter to its frayed lower edge; the small flame begins to blacken the corner. She asks Samas to make an offer large enough that she might reconsider whether she can reimburse Evan. Samas first proposes three million dollars. Poppy answers with twenty million. When he finally accepts, she closes the lighter and turns to Evan to offer a fifty-fifty split. Her threat is not carried out, but its credibility forces the negotiation beyond Samas’s initial figure.
The Division of the Reward
Evan calls the proposed division more than fair. Poppy rebukes him for setting his standards too low, framing the equal split not as a favor but as the proper counter to people who would prey on him. Her defense of his share is part of the partnership’s substance: she uses her negotiating power not only to increase the total but to ensure that Evan receives half.
Samas then instructs Mr. Diltz to transfer ten million American dollars into each of their accounts. He hangs up without saying goodbye and leans back, clutching the roll, defeated. Poppy nods toward the stairs, indicating that the encounter is over. Evan touches Samas’s shoulder and thanks him for the opportunity, while expressing pity for what Samas is rather than for what has happened to him. He also leaves the guitar with Samas for Zohra. The payment completes the alliance’s immediate purpose, while Evan’s gesture toward Zohra distinguishes the negotiated settlement from simple humiliation or seizure.
Character and Significance
Poppy’s partnership with Evan combines protection with leverage. She appears unexpectedly with his cane, understands the value of the concealed painting, offers him an immediate alternative, and then risks the work itself to force a better settlement. Evan, in turn, contributes more than possession: he chooses to stay in the deal with her and publicly commits to trusting her before they enter Samas’s home. Neither person’s role is interchangeable in the exchange. Poppy controls the threat and the price; Evan’s acceptance makes the joint claim and equal division possible.
The alliance also brings Cognomina’s long horizon into a sharply practical scene. The group’s property system preserves assets across deaths and returns them to members who reappear, while the welcome gifts establish that a new member may be provided for in a future life. Here, that principle of continuity is reflected in a present-tense bargain: Poppy does not simply rescue Evan from a bad offer but secures a share he can claim alongside her. Their partnership is not presented as free of conflict—Poppy names vengeance as her own purpose—but she draws a clear line between that purpose and Evan, and acts to protect his financial interest. Trust becomes the condition that lets two different aims converge on one negotiated outcome.
