Evan and Poppy’s romance and advocacy bond
The Reincarnationist PapersEvan Michaels and Poppy’s relationship develops where romantic possibility meets institutional trust: Poppy guides Evan toward the Cognomina, then becomes the person from whom he must separate when her private life unsettles him. Their bond moves from a tender invitation to a sharp boundary, but Poppy remains present at Evan’s initiation, carrying their connection into his new place among the society.
Advocacy and growing intimacy
Poppy first occupies a position of unusual trust in Evan’s new life. After taking him through a descent into an ancient grotto, she assures him that his past is safe with the group. The setting is part of the approach to the Cognomina’s Ascension, the test by which a candidate must convince those who knew him before that he is the same person in a new body. Poppy’s role is therefore more than personal reassurance: she is also Evan’s guide into a community whose acceptance depends on proof of continuity across lives.
After the encounter, Evan cautiously asks whether they can spend their shared night off together, admitting that he misses her. Poppy responds with warmth he has not previously seen from her. She explains that she will first have dinner elsewhere, invites him to her room later that night, and kisses him. The exchange gives Evan reason to expect a private meeting shaped by mutual affection. His invitation is tentative; her answer appears welcoming, and the kiss makes their closeness tangible rather than merely implied by her earlier care for him.
The encounter at room seventeen
The expectation collapses when Evan goes to Poppy’s room. He finds her with several other adults in an intimate gathering. The scene is not what he anticipated, and his immediate response is shock: he struggles to remain steady and closes the door rather than entering. Poppy, by contrast, appears calm and treats his arrival as something she had expected. Her response does not resolve the mismatch between them; it sharpens it. The same invitation that Evan understood as the beginning of a private encounter belongs, for Poppy, to a situation he had not understood.
When they meet again, Poppy asks why he did not stay. Evan says he was not expecting what he found, while Poppy indicates that the gathering had also surprised her when she first encountered the people there and that he could have joined them. The difference between their readings remains plain: Evan had approached the invitation as a sign of personal intimacy, whereas Poppy presents participation as a choice. Her casual manner makes the exchange harder for him rather than soothing the disappointment. The episode establishes a consequential limit in their relationship: attraction and an invitation do not mean that the two of them share the same expectations of intimacy.
Evan changes advocates
The disagreement becomes a direct break in their working relationship. Evan tells Poppy that he is grateful for what she has done but cannot continue with her as his advocate. He objects to her condescending manner and says he has asked for someone new. Poppy shows little outward reaction and asks who will take her place. Evan names Samas, clarifying that he chose him rather than being assigned to him. Poppy is astonished by the decision, but the exchange ends with Evan’s choice intact.
This change matters because Poppy’s advocacy had joined emotional closeness to Evan’s passage into the Cognomina. He does not deny the help she gave him; he explicitly acknowledges his debt even as he refuses to continue in the same arrangement. The distinction lets the scene hold gratitude and hurt together without presenting one as canceling the other. Poppy’s calm response, meanwhile, leaves the personal meaning of the rupture open. The evidence shows a transfer of advocacy and a conflict over their interaction, not a settled resolution of their romantic bond.
Welcome, naming, and the surviving bond
After a four-to-one vote confirms that Evan is who he claims to be, the group welcomes him as a brother. Poppy emerges from behind a column and is revealed to have helped organize the welcome. She approaches Evan in a black evening dress that displays her colorful tattoo, then teases him and says he deserved the earlier treatment for being an ass. Her manner is playful rather than conciliatory in any formal sense: the exchange restores a familiar ease, but it does not erase the earlier conflict or establish that Evan has resumed his courtship of her.
Poppy then leads the next step in Evan’s incorporation. She offers him the leather gauntlet bearing the Embe-shaped template, and he slips his hand inside as she holds it in place. When he asks her name, she identifies herself as Nez-lah and says that everyone there calls her Poppy. Auda prepares the tattooing tools and ink. In this public, communal setting, Poppy is again beside Evan at a decisive threshold, but now she is not his advocate: Samas has taken that role, and the group has already accepted Evan. Their connection thus changes form rather than disappearing. Poppy remains an intimate, teasing presence in the ceremony that makes Evan’s belonging visible, while the shift in names and roles marks the distance between their earlier private expectations and his new identity within the Cognomina.
