Evan’s Departure from Minnesota and Burning of the Barn

The Reincarnationist Papers

Evan Michaels’s departure from Minnesota and the burning of the family barn mark a break from a home that could not accept his account of another life. His mother’s gift of Evan’s Russian military lighter briefly softened the rupture with his parents; the barn fire the following night showed that reconciliation had not ended the force of his memories.

Departure from Home

With only two months of high school left, Evan told his parents he was leaving and would not return. After the shocks of his earlier disclosures, the announcement initially seemed to pass with little notice. His parents’ eventual acceptance prompted his father to attempt a half-hearted reconciliation, while his mother offered a quieter gesture.

Two nights before Evan left, his mother pressed Evan’s Russian military lighter into his hand after supper. She said nothing as she gave it to him, instead holding him tightly and rocking with him at the table, stroking his blond hair. Evan went upstairs, packed his things, and cried through the night. The lighter thus accompanied his departure not as a spoken settlement, but as an unspoken act of tenderness.

The Barn Fire

The animosity between Evan and his parents had ended, but the memories that had helped provoke the family conflict remained. On his last night at home, Evan used the lighter to burn down the barn. The sequence turns the apparent reconciliation into an uneasy parting: the family’s anger had subsided, but Evan’s inner upheaval had not.

The Lighter and the Recollection

The departure and arson are recalled while Evan is handling the lighter in a later scene. As he brings it toward a trail of vodka, the narrative connects this small object with the fire that closed his life in Minnesota. Evan describes flame as a force that can carry truth back from the past as well as consume; in that framing, the barn fire is both a concrete act of destruction and part of the continuing relationship between his memories and fire.
