Vardar River Valley
The Reincarnationist PapersThe Vardar River Valley is the setting of Vasili’s only battle in the autumn of 1918, a brief and unlikely stand amid the collapse of the Bulgarian front. Its significance in his account lies in the contrast between the valley’s exposed position and the fact that his unit surprised its opponents and survived.
Setting and Strategic Position
The account places the action where the Cherna River flows into the Vardar, forming a small triangle of land. The position was a poor place to make a stand, even for a single night. By September 18 and 19, 1918, the Bulgarian front had already been in full retreat for three weeks, making the choice of ground all the more precarious.
The location also oriented the unit toward the larger front: five Krupp 77 mm howitzers faced south toward Greece, with two French divisions somewhere on the horizon. The landscape was not a secure defensive position but a narrow, exposed point within a rapidly changing military situation.
The Valley in Vasili’s Recollection
Vasili describes fighting the French and the Serbs in the Vardar River Valley, but says he was there only briefly and took part in just one battle. He identifies Captain Hoxa as his commanding officer. The account emphasizes that the unit should not have been at that position; Vasili presents that unlikely circumstance as the reason they caught the opposing forces by surprise and survived.
Before the fighting, Vasili worked in the autumn sun beside the gun emplacement, stacking 75-pound, two-foot-long artillery shells in rows three deep. The five howitzers stood nearby as he paused to speak with Captain Hoxa. This practical detail anchors the recollection in the labor of preparing the guns, before the precarious position became a battlefield.
Narrative Significance
The valley is recalled as a fleeting episode rather than the beginning of a sustained campaign: the front was collapsing, Vasili’s time there was short, and the engagement was the only battle he remembered fighting in that sector. Its geography, the retreat, and the unexpected survival together give the episode its defining tension. In the larger account, the place serves as a concrete test of Vasili’s wartime memories, distinguished by precise dates, terrain, weapons, and command.
