Vasili Arda is imprisoned and flees to Istanbul

The Reincarnationist Papers

Vasili Arda’s imprisonment and flight to Istanbul grew out of his and Vanya’s refusal to surrender their land to Bulgaria’s newly organized collective farms. Their forced separation, Vanya’s death in prison, and Vasili’s eventual departure turned a political upheaval into a private history that later returns through Evan Michaels’s recognition of a cigarette brand.

Background and Forced Separation

In the closing months of World War II, Communist forces took power in Bulgaria on September 9, 1944, alongside the westward advance of Soviet forces. By 1946, Bulgaria had become a Communist Soviet client state, and collectivization had spread through farms and industry. Vasili and Vanya refused to give up their land and join a collective farm. The authorities sent them to separate internment camps, making the political reorganization of the countryside the cause of their separation.

Imprisonment and Flight

Vanya died shortly after entering prison. Vasili survived imprisonment and, upon his release in 1948, fled to Istanbul. The account establishes both the cost of their refusal and the different outcomes of their confinement: Vanya did not leave prison alive, while Vasili’s release became the point from which he could escape Bulgaria. His move to Istanbul marks the end of this episode, not a return to the life he and Vanya had defended on their land.

The Memory That Remains

The event re-enters the narrative through Lendts cigarettes. Evan recognizes the distinctive orange-and-white pack and recalls that Vasili began smoking in prison, then switched from the Bulgarian state brand to Lendts after reaching Turkey. Evan’s unprompted recollection of the slogan, “Centuries of flavor,” makes an ordinary cigarette a specific trace of Vasili’s past: imprisonment and exile persist in the habits and memories carried into another life. The remembered brand links the historical flight to Evan’s present without undoing the loss that preceded it.
