Jon Westerley and Ocpetis Mam
The Robot Who Looked Like MeJon Westerley and Ocpetis Mam are presented as loyal companions whose solidarity becomes most visible when they face the Megenth Horde together. Their bond is both practical and personal: they fight back to back, encourage one another with grim humor, and meet the prospect of defeat side by side. A later account darkens that image, revealing that Ocpetis’s mind had been taken over and that his unwitting actions helped place Westerley in mortal danger.
Companionship Under Attack
When the Megenth forces approach across a green-and-purple moss sward, Jon draws his sword and hears Ocpetis draw his with a metallic hiss. Ocpetis stands back to back with him, turning their companionship into an immediate tactical alliance as the Horde advances with raftii, long, curved, double-pointed dirks feared across the civilized galaxy.
Ocpetis proposes that they sell their lives dearly. Jon answers with a grim prediction of widows dancing the Passagekeen; Ocpetis adds that bereaved fathers may make a lonely sacrifice to the God of Deteriorations. They smile at one another’s staunch words, but the humor does not lessen the danger. Their exchange shows a shared resolve expressed through the customs and language of their worlds, rather than through any expectation that they can win.
The Fight and Its Limits
The attack quickly confirms the disparity between their courage and their prospects. Jon parries the first blade and thrusts into an attacker’s throat, then braces for the next opponent. When two Megenth fighters come at him, he hears Ocpetis hacking and hewing nearby. The narration calls the situation utterly hopeless, making their stand a measure of mutual loyalty rather than a likely escape.
The account does not establish the fight’s precise outcome. It does, however, place the pair together at the point when the Megenth assault overwhelms their position, while a later explanation describes Westerley’s arrival in a ring of Black Force as the end for him.
Compromised Loyalty and Westerley’s End
A retrospective account explains that the reptilian forces of Megenth began expanding after receiving a serum, and that Jon was hastily recalled from a secret mission to Angos II. He materialized within a ring of Black Force because of what the account calls the inadvertent treachery of Ocpetis, his faithful Mnerian companion. Ocpetis had been trapped in the Hall of Floating Mirrors, where the renegade Santhis, leader of the Entropy Guild, had taken over his mind.
This revelation recasts the apparent contradiction at the center of their relationship: Ocpetis is both Jon’s steadfast sword-companion and an unwitting instrument in the circumstances that doom him. The account attributes the betrayal to coercion and mental takeover, not to a deliberate choice against Jon. It calls Westerley’s predicament the beginning of the end for the rest of the group, extending the consequences of their broken partnership beyond the two companions themselves.
