Chunyu Qiong
The Romance of the Three KingdomsChunyu Qiong is Yuan Shao’s commander at Wuchao, the key supply base during the prolonged confrontation with Cao Cao at Guandu. His appointment places him at the center of the campaign’s decisive logistical vulnerability: when Cao Cao attacks the depot by night, Chunyu Qiong is drunk and asleep, and the grain is destroyed.
Role at Wuchao
As the armies at Guandu face months of stalemate and dwindling provisions, Yuan Shao sends twenty thousand men to guard Wuchao. Chunyu Qiong is given command of this essential store of supplies. The narrative characterizes him as an alcoholic whose drink-fuelled rages frighten his own soldiers, and says he is drunk from the moment he arrives. His personal conduct thus shadows the strategic importance of the post he has been entrusted to protect.
Cao Cao’s Attack
After Xu You defects to Cao Cao, he identifies the vulnerability at Wuchao: Yuan Shao’s supplies are concentrated there, and Chunyu Qiong is in charge. Xu You advises Cao Cao to lead an elite force to the depot disguised as troops sent to reinforce its protection. Cao Cao adopts the plan and leads his men there at night in the enemy’s armour and colours.
The deception succeeds. Chunyu Qiong is asleep and drunk when the attackers arrive, and they seize him as the entire grain supply is burned. Cao Cao sends him back to Yuan Shao as a warning. The episode turns Chunyu Qiong’s drunkenness into more than a character detail: it coincides with the failure to defend the resource on which Yuan Shao’s army depends.
Consequences and Narrative Significance
The destruction of Wuchao’s grain leaves Yuan Shao’s forces in crisis and contributes directly to the collapse of his position at Guandu. Chunyu Qiong’s defeat belongs to the book’s larger contrast between overwhelming numbers and effective strategy: Cao Cao has far fewer troops, but a timely attack on the enemy’s supplies changes the campaign’s balance. Chunyu Qiong is remembered in the narrative chiefly through this pivotal command and its disastrous outcome.
