Execution of Ma Teng

The Romance of the Three Kingdoms

The execution of Ma Teng is the decisive outcome of a failed plot against Cao Cao: Ma Teng and one of his sons are captured in a trap and condemned, while the betrayal that exposes the conspiracy also leads Cao Cao to order the deaths of the informants and their families. The episode closes Ma Teng’s role in the story but sets Ma Chao’s revenge in motion, turning a failed attack within Cao Cao’s domain into a western threat to his rule.

Causes and Background

Ma Teng’s death follows a plan to assassinate Cao Cao, but the evidence presented here emphasizes how the conspiracy is undone by betrayal within the plotters’ own circle. Huang Kui, unable to confide in his wife, tells his concubine Li Chunxiang. She is involved with her brother-in-law, Miao Ze, who wants her for himself; after learning of the plot from her, Miao Ze informs Cao Cao. Cao Cao responds by summoning his commanders and preparing a counterplot.

The wider political stakes are already high. When news of the planned attack reaches Xuande, Kong Ming proposes using Ma Teng’s death to redirect Cao Cao’s attention: since Ma Teng’s son Ma Chao now controls the Xiliang tribal warriors, Xuande should invite him to attack from the west while Xuande attacks from the south. Ma Teng’s execution therefore becomes more than the punishment of a defeated conspirator. It creates the family grievance on which a new military alignment can be built.

The Trap and Capture

The next morning, Ma Teng, his sons, and their troops parade before the city walls. A group of banners emerges from the gate, and Ma Teng and his sons charge, believing Cao Cao is among them. The banners part to reveal archers and crossbowmen, while Cao Cao’s men attack from other directions as the group tries to retreat. One son dies defending his father; Ma Teng and the other son are seriously wounded and captured. Huang Kui is also taken, and the prisoners are brought before Cao Cao.

The sequence turns on the contrast between the apparent target and the concealed force. Ma Teng’s party commits to the attack before discovering that the banners mask an ambush; once the trap closes, the attempt to escape becomes capture. The scene thus resolves the immediate military contest in Cao Cao’s favor and delivers the conspirators into his hands.

Execution and the Conspiracy’s Aftermath

Cao Cao condemns Ma Teng and his son to death, and they are taken out and executed. The episode does not describe the execution itself; its significance lies in the abrupt conversion of capture into a sentence and in the political consequences that follow. Ma Teng’s death removes the father whose threatened killing had formed part of the conspiracy’s stakes, but it does not extinguish the conflict around his family.

Miao Ze then approaches Cao Cao to ask for Li Chunxiang as his reward, saying he wants nothing else. Cao Cao rejects the request and condemns Miao Ze, Li Chunxiang, Huang Kui, and Huang Kui’s entire family to public execution. The conspiratorial betrayal thus ends not with a private reward but with a wider punishment. Those who witness the outcome are moved by the account of treachery, and the episode’s closing poetic judgment stresses that Miao Ze’s pursuit of Li Chunxiang brings destruction without gain.

Revenge and Narrative Consequence

The execution’s political afterlife becomes clear when Xuande’s message reaches Ma Chao. On learning that his father and brothers have been killed, Ma Chao vows revenge. Xuande’s proposal arrives at that moment, and Ma Chao agrees to attack Cao Cao from the west if Xuande attacks from the south. With support from others in the region, more than two hundred thousand tribal warriors advance toward Chang’an; the governor Zhong Yao is defeated in the first engagement and retreats into the city, which Ma Chao then besieges.

This chain of consequences gives the execution its broader narrative force. Cao Cao has suppressed the immediate conspiracy, but the killing of Ma Teng supplies Ma Chao with a cause for war and helps transform Xuande’s proposed alliance into coordinated pressure on Cao Cao. The episode therefore closes one plot through capture and punishment while opening another through filial revenge and military alliance.
