Jiang Shu
The Romance of the Three KingdomsJiang Shu is a minor figure whose brief disclosure helps shift the atmosphere surrounding Wei’s advance into Shu: when Zhong Hui asks about a mysterious disturbance on Dingjun Mountain, Jiang Shu identifies the tomb of Kong Ming as its source. The information leads Zhong Hui to make offerings at the tomb, after which the disturbances cease.
Identity and Context
Jiang Shu appears amid the Wei campaign that is bringing Shu’s territory under pressure. Zhong Hui and his men have been disturbed on successive nights by the sound of armed men, though they find no one. Their search leads them to a mist-covered hill identified as Dingjun Mountain, where phantom horsemen have appeared in a storm and driven them to flee. When Zhong Hui asks whether a shrine stands on the hill, Jiang Shu answers that it contains Kong Ming’s tomb.
Disclosure and Consequence
Jiang Shu’s role is narrowly defined but consequential: he supplies the explanation that turns a baffling military disturbance into an encounter associated with Kong Ming’s burial place. Zhong Hui responds by preparing sacrifices and offerings, then returns the following day to pay his respects. The account says calm descends on the region once he has done so. Jiang Shu is thus the source of the crucial information, while Zhong Hui carries out the ritual response; the narrative does not describe Jiang Shu as causing the apparitions or taking part in the offerings.
Narrative Role
The episode places Jiang Shu at the intersection of military conquest and supernatural memory. As Wei advances and Shu’s position deteriorates, the tomb of Kong Ming remains a force capable of shaping the conduct of the conquerors. Jiang Shu’s plain identification of the tomb enables Zhong Hui to recognize that the disturbance is connected with the revered Shu strategist. The brief exchange therefore gives Jiang Shu a precise function in the scene: he names the place that makes the uncanny events intelligible and prompts the action that brings them to an end.
