Langzhong

The Romance of the Three Kingdoms

Langzhong is the military base associated with Zhang Fei in the preparations for Liu Bei’s campaign against Wu. After Guan Yu’s death, the city becomes the setting for Zhang Fei’s grief, his appointment to command the revenge expedition, and the escalating conflict with the officers who ultimately kill him.

Military Base and Campaign Preparations

When Liu Bei resolves to avenge Guan Yu, he appoints Zhang Fei supreme commander and orders that an additional fifty thousand troops be summoned from the Qiang people. Zhang Fei is based in Langzhong when news of Guan Yu’s death reaches him. His response is intense grief and anger; after his appointment brings him some calm, he travels to Chengdu to confront Liu Bei over opposition at court to the proposed war.

Liu Bei later sets out with a combined force of 750,000 men. In Langzhong, Zhang Fei orders his troops to be ready within three days and directs them to wear white, the color of mourning. The compressed timetable turns the preparations into a direct test of his authority: when two officers say their men cannot be ready so quickly, Zhang Fei punishes them and demands that everything be completed by the following day.

Zhang Fei’s Death and the City’s Memory

The two officers, Fan Jiang and Zhang Da, fear that Zhang Fei will execute them and begin plotting to kill him. Zhang Fei is murdered before he can join Liu Bei’s expedition. His killers take his head and flee south toward Wu; by the time the murder is discovered, it is too late to pursue them. The account remembers his death as a lasting source of sadness in Langzhong, fixing the city in the narrative not only as a military base but also as the place associated with the loss of its commander.

Narrative Significance

Langzhong’s role is concentrated rather than extensive: it is not presented through a broad description of its landscape or civic life, but through the events that unfold around Zhang Fei there. The movement from mourning to military preparation, and from command to murder, makes the city a point where public duty and personal grief converge. Its association with Zhang Fei’s death also gives the location a lasting memorial significance in the story.
